Xbox CEO Declares “Return of Xbox” For Next-Gen Console, Teasing Details Coming Soon

Xbox has been going through some big shifts lately. Starting in 2025, they’re planning to release games on multiple platforms instead of keeping them exclusive to Xbox consoles. Recently, there were also changes in leadership – Phil Spencer left, and while Sarah Bond was expected to take over, Asha Sharma was appointed as the new Xbox CEO. These changes left many gamers wondering about the future of Xbox consoles. There was concern that the next Xbox might not be a traditional console, but a hybrid device similar to a PC. However, in a recent statement, Sharma suggested that a more conventional next-generation Xbox is still planned.

The Xbox Series X and S launched in 2020, so people have been expecting a new generation of consoles soon. While there have been rumors about Xbox’s plans – including a possible shift away from traditional consoles towards PC hybrids – details have been scarce. Recently, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that a new Xbox console is in development, codenamed “Project Helix.” This signals a return to dedicated Xbox hardware after exploring options like the ROG Ally handheld.

Xbox CEO Reveals Code Name Project Helix for Next-Gen Xbox Console

The collaboration between Xbox and ROG resulted in the Xbox ROG Ally, a device that blurs the line between a traditional Xbox console and a PC. This has sparked speculation that the next Xbox won’t be a typical console, but more of a powerful gaming PC. Microsoft’s move away from exclusive games for its consoles, combined with comments from former Xbox President Sarah Bond—who likened the next Xbox to the ROG Ally—fueled these rumors.

While recent statements from CEO Asha Sharma haven’t completely calmed concerns about the next Xbox, she did emphasize “the return of Xbox,” suggesting a shift away from the idea of Xbox being everywhere. Sharma also shared the console’s internal code name, “Project Helix,” which is the first official hint about what the team is calling the next-generation console. However, like most code names, it doesn’t reveal many details about the console itself.

We kicked off the day with the Xbox team, discussing our dedication to the future of Xbox, including Project Helix – the internal name for our next-generation console. Project Helix is designed to deliver top-tier performance and will let you play games from both your Xbox and PC. We’ll be sharing more details soon…

The recent statement about Xbox “returning” could hint at new consoles, but fans shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Sharma also mentioned “Project Helix” will deliver top performance and allow players to enjoy Xbox and PC games on one system. This suggests the idea of combining consoles and PCs might still be in development, despite earlier reports that it was scrapped.

We’ll probably find out more about Project Helix soon. Sharma mentioned she plans to discuss the news further at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) next week, March 9th-13th in San Francisco. It sounds like we might get some solid details about the next Xbox during the conference.
