As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and frustration upon hearing about the delay of Obsidian Entertainment’s highly-anticipated RPG, Avowed. While I understand the need to balance release schedules, it’s hard not to chuckle at the irony of waiting for a game titled “Avowed” to actually, well…avow a release date.
It has been confirmed this week that Obsidian Entertainment’s new game, Avowed, will not be released this year as previously anticipated. Instead, Xbox has set a specific release date for the RPG on February 18, 2025. The delay is due to a congested schedule towards the end of the year, according to Xbox. Previously, there was no fixed release date for Avowed, but it was expected to come out in 2024, with many believing an official release date would be announced at Xbox’s Gamescom event this month.
On Friday night, a casual announcement about the postponement of the release of Avowed was made on social media. This update came with an infographic displaying various first-party games scheduled for Xbox and PC in 2023 and beyond. Originally, Avowed was set to debut in 2024, but that’s no longer the plan. To keep gamers occupied while they eagerly await Avowed, Microsoft shared other games they can explore in the meantime.
“With numerous games on the horizon, we’ve decided to push back the release of Avowed to February 18, 2025. This will provide gamers a bit more time to work through their game collections.”
It’s important to note that not every game shown in the image is exclusive to Xbox and Windows PC. In fact, games such as “Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” and “Doom: The Dark Ages” can be played on other platforms like the PlayStation 5 too. On the other hand, titles like “Age of Mythology: Retold,” “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” and “Fable” will only be available on these specific platforms.
The creator of Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment, has previously developed games such as The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas. Unlike some who liken it to Skyrim, Obsidian itself suggests that a comparison to its earlier Fallout game might be more fitting.
In the imaginative realm of Eora, previously explored in the Pillars of Eternity series, comes Avowed – a first-person fantasy action RPG by the acclaimed Obsidian Entertainment team. As an emissary from the faraway Aedyr, you’re tasked with investigating whispers of a spreading disease across the Living Lands – an island teeming with enigmas, secrets, perils, and opportunities for adventure, along with choices that shape outcomes and uncharted wilderness. As you delve deeper, you uncover a profound link to the Living Lands and an age-old secret that could annihilate all it holds. Can you protect this unexplored frontier and your own spirit from the malevolent forces seeking to tear them apart?
Avowed will be at Gamescom this month, so expect to see more gameplay from the delayed game then.
