2025 is turning out to be a surprisingly costly year for gamers. Nintendo unexpectedly started selling games for $80, and then PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all increased the price of their existing consoles – something they haven’t done in a long time – due to changing market conditions and tariffs. As the holiday season nears, gamers don’t want to hear about rising prices, but unfortunately, that’s the reality for Xbox fans.
Microsoft raised the prices of its Xbox consoles and games back in May, increasing the Series S to $379 and the Series X to $599. Now, those prices are going up again. This holiday season, the Xbox Series X will cost $650, and the more affordable Series S will be $400. Many fans are upset that the prices of consoles that are already five years old keep increasing.
For Xbox Fans, “The Price Is Just Getting Worse and Worse”
U.S. Xbox fans can expect to pay more for some Xbox Series S and Series X consoles. Here’s the updated pricing:
- Xbox Series S (512 GB) – $399.99 (up from $379.99)
- Xbox Series S (1 TB) – $449.99 (up from $429.99)
- Xbox Series X (Digital) – $599.99 (up from $549.99)
- Xbox Series X – $649.99 (up from $599.99)
- Xbox Series X (2 TB Black Special Edition) – $799.99
Xbox fans on the r/xbox subreddit are surprised and upset about the latest price increase. Many remember buying the current Xbox consoles for around $350 just last year – even with a sale price, a $300 jump in price after almost five years feels significant to them.

Many popular new games aren’t coming to the older Xbox One, leading a lot of fans to want to upgrade to the newer Xbox Series X or Series S. However, even with holiday discounts, the newer consoles might actually cost *more* than they did when they first came out, and fans are understandably upset.
A lot of people are reacting negatively to Microsoft’s price increase, feeling the consoles aren’t worth the new cost. Since new consoles are expected to be released in the next few years, many don’t want to spend so much on a system that will soon be outdated, like the PS4 and Xbox One.

The recent price hike means the Xbox Series X is now more expensive than the PlayStation 5. With Xbox also releasing fewer games that are only available on their consoles, many players are questioning whether the new price is justified. This price increase is also causing concern about how much future consoles might cost.
So, I was reading on Windows Central that Microsoft is raising prices, and they’re saying it’s because of the economy. But honestly, it seems like it’s mostly hitting us in the U.S., which makes me think it’s tied to those tariffs we’ve been dealing with. It just feels like they’re passing those costs onto us gamers.
Okay, so it seems like the consoles themselves are getting more expensive, but thankfully controllers and other accessories are staying the same price for now. Honestly, this means the holidays are going to be tough for anyone hoping to get a console as a gift – it’s just going to be harder to afford one this year.
