Xbox Game Pass subscribers are really enjoying a classic first-person shooter, especially those who love sci-fi. While it’s considered one of the best shooters ever made, it originally came out 25 years ago, meaning a lot of players may have missed it. If you haven’t played it, now’s a great time – a 2011 update keeps it feeling fresh and modern.
The original Halo: Combat Evolved came out in 2001, published by Microsoft Game Studios and developed by Bungie. It’s been in the spotlight recently because a remake is coming out later this year, with rumors suggesting it might be released unexpectedly soon. However, many fans believe that the current developer, 343 Industries, doesn’t quite match the quality of Bungie’s original work, leading to doubts about the remake’s success. While fans wait, the remastered version from 2011 on Xbox 360 remains a popular choice.
I was checking out the Xbox Game Pass subreddit, and there’s a really popular post right now about a 25-year-old game that everyone’s calling a masterpiece. It’s cool to see people still appreciating a classic like that!
According to a recent post, Halo: Combat Evolved remains a fantastic game even on the Xbox Series X, standing the test of time better than many modern titles.

One commenter expressed their love for the game and highlighted how well it plays on the Xbox Series X. Another person agreed, questioning the need for a remake when the remastered version still looks and plays great.
The original Halo: Combat Evolved is now a permanent part of Xbox Game Pass and can be played on all tiers except Essential. While a remake is coming soon, it might not be the best time to revisit the classic – and opinions suggest the remake won’t be a perfect recreation. In fact, the remake will feature significant changes and updates. This means the original game remains a great option for those who want the classic Halo experience with updated 2011-era graphics, without the alterations planned for the remake.
