Microsoft has officially announced the next generation of Xbox, currently known as Project Helix. While the final name isn’t revealed yet, it’s expected to be a device that combines the power of a PC with the convenience of a console. However, some fans are already worried Microsoft might choose another disappointing name, recalling past naming decisions.
Xbox revealed its next console as ‘Project Helix’ almost two weeks ago, and many gamers instantly thought the temporary name was better than what the final product would be called. A popular comment on a Reddit post about the announcement, made by user u/Logondo, summed it up: “Their code names are always better than the real names.” Xbox has a pattern of releasing consoles with somewhat confusing names, and ‘Project Helix’ might indicate that trend is starting again.
Xbox’s Project Helix Will Launch Under A Different Name
Okay, so everyone’s been talking about what Microsoft will call the next Xbox, and honestly, I don’t think it’ll be “Helix.” They always share the codenames early on as part of the hype. But trying to guess the actual name? Forget about it! Xbox names have been so random over the years, it’s almost a joke. Even the codenames get teased, which is kinda funny, but it proves there’s no real logic to it. It’s just a total mystery!
Recent online discussions, particularly on Reddit, about Microsoft’s ‘Project Helix’ have focused on what the new device might be called, with many expecting a disappointing name. Given the current Xbox console names – Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S – there are countless options. The situation is even more complex because the device seems to be a PC with Xbox features, which could mean they’re considering a completely different naming approach.
Xbox’s Code Names Are Always Better
Xbox
Xbox has had some trouble with its recent console names, which is surprising given how great their internal project names often are. Here are a few of those in-development names that were actually better than what they ultimately released:
- Xbox One: Project Durango
- Xbox One X: Project Scorpio
- Xbox One S: Project Edmonton
- Xbox Series X/S family: Project Scarlett
- Xbox Series X: Project Anaconda
- Xbox Series S: Project Lockhart
I have mixed feelings about the Xbox 360’s original code name, Project Xenon – it sounds really cool, but I also like the somewhat quirky name ‘360’ that it eventually got. Some of the other code names, like ‘Xbox Lockhart,’ don’t sound like great console names either. However, I think ‘Lockhart’ is better than ‘Series S,’ especially when you consider how confusing the naming of this generation has been compared to the previous one.
Fixing this naming issue is tricky. It would feel strange to fall into a pattern like ‘PlayStation 6,’ but Nintendo has proven that original names can be successful (though the Wii U was an exception). However, with Xbox shifting its focus towards PC gaming, everything is still uncertain. Sadly, even a good name choice for Xbox will probably create disagreement among players, unless they simply go with ‘Helix,’ which is a strong option.
