Xbox sees multiple games in the top 20 bestsellers for August in the U.S. — while NBA 2K26 takes the top spot

New sales figures for the U.S. video game market are out, and an analyst from Circana is sharing details on August 2025’s top-selling games and consoles on Bluesky.

As a huge gaming fan, I was really not surprised to see NBA 2K26 topping the charts this month! It’s amazing. Madden NFL 26 was right behind it, which makes sense since it was so popular last month. But what really excited me was seeing two new games break into the top four – 2K’s Mafia: The Old Country at number three, and Konami’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater grabbing the fourth spot! It’s a great time to be a gamer.

Several games published by Xbox were among the top 20 bestsellers. Gears of War: Reloaded from The Coalition entered the chart at number six. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2, a PlayStation game, saw a boost in sales after its release on Xbox, climbing to number fourteen after previously being outside the top 20.

Hardware sales increased by 32% compared to last year, mainly thanks to strong continued sales of the Nintendo Switch 2. However, sales of the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and the original Nintendo Switch all decreased significantly – by more than 10%.

Spending on subscriptions that aren’t for mobile devices keeps increasing, rising 19% compared to the same time last year.

I was really interested to see the latest sales figures, and they’re pretty impressive! We saw an 11% jump in spending compared to last year, bringing in a total of $4.7 billion in sales just for this month. It’s great to see such solid growth!

A varied month, even with several of the usual heavy-hitters

Most of the games included aren’t unexpected, but it’s good to see a decent variety this month.

I was really happy to see Mafia: The Old Country doing so well. It was released with a $50 price tag, which 2K and the developers set because it’s a shorter game than most.

I’m still observing a consistent rise in how much people are spending on subscriptions. Given the recent price increase for Xbox Game Pass and with several new Xbox games, especially Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, on the way, I’m really interested to see if we notice any changes in spending patterns once those games are released.
