Virtuos, a studio renowned for collaborating with top game developers, boasts an impressive understanding of game development processes and the functionalities of various gaming consoles. Eoin O’Grady, a key figure at Black Shamrock, a division of Virtuos who has contributed to hit titles like Grounded and The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, recently shared insights on the potential abilities of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 in an interview.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled about O’Grady’s insights shared with WCCFTech. He highlighted that if a game is optimized for a smooth 60 FPS experience on Xbox Series S, it could potentially be transferred to the upcoming Switch 2 without compromising performance. This ease of transition is largely attributed to the advanced upscaling technology embedded in the Switch 2, which is modeled after Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology.
O’Grady discussed a point where he compared the potential raw power of the Switch 2 to be slightly less than the Xbox Series S in terms of performance. Yet, there’s a significant advantage that brings the Nintendo console on par with the Xbox Series S – it utilizes a technology known as DLSS.
In terms of graphics processing units (GPUs), the Switch 2 lags slightly behind the Xbox Series S, but this disparity is more apparent when in handheld mode. It’s worth noting that the Series S doesn’t feature technologies like DLSS, which the Switch 2 does. As a result, despite the difference in raw GPU power, both consoles are fairly evenly matched overall due to these unique features.
Regarding the CPU, there’s less room for debate; the Switch 2 is more akin to the PS4 in terms of processing power compared to current-generation consoles. As O’Grady pointed out, because games generally rely more on a system’s graphics processor (GPU) than its central processing unit (CPU), the relatively weaker CPU doesn’t pose much of an issue for the Switch 2 due to its powerful GPU.
He pointed out that when it comes to the central processing unit (CPU), there’s a noticeable gap between the two gaming consoles. The Switch 2 seems to be more akin to the PlayStation 4 (PS4) in terms of CPU power, with its CPU being slightly stronger than the PS4’s. However, since most games are primarily reliant on the graphics processing unit (GPU) for optimal performance when well-optimized, the significance of this CPU difference largely depends on the specific game and the desired frame rate it aims to achieve.
“Games running at 60 frames per second (FPS) on the Xbox Series S should have no trouble being adapted for the Switch 2. Similarly, games that run at 30 FPS on the Series S, but are primarily dependent on the graphics processor, should also transition smoothly. However, games with intricate physics, animations, or other CPU-intensive aspects may encounter additional hurdles in achieving 30 or 60 FPS and might require extra optimization during the porting process.”
Together with Alex Heise, Director of Business at Virtuos North America, O’Grady has also shared insights about the achievement of the Switch 2, as well as Nintendo’s practice of refining their concepts for their upcoming significant launches.
Heise pointed out that the Nintendo Switch 2 represents one of the most iterative consoles launched by Nintendo in years, since the shift from NES to SNES. Interestingly, no previous Nintendo console has had a “2” in its name. However, this time around, they strategically chose to build upon the established success and strong brand of the original Switch with an enhanced, yet familiar product. Gamers can instantly see the value in the Switch 2 as it surpasses previous console launches like the Wii U in terms of appeal.
