For a limited time, you can get last year’s Game of the Year for just $8 on Xbox Series X! The deal is available from Microsoft Store, GameStop, and Walmart. While the expiration dates for GameStop and Walmart aren’t known, the Microsoft Store’s offer ends on January 8th. Keep in mind that GameStop and Walmart are selling physical copies, while the Microsoft Store is offering the game digitally.
The game, available on both Xbox Series X and Xbox One, won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2021, surpassing titles like Deathloop, Metroid Dread, Resident Evil Village, Psychonauts 2, and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. It’s It Takes Two, developed by Hazelight Studios and published by EA. While EA is a well-known publisher, Hazelight Studios is a Swedish studio founded in 2014 by Josef Fares. They first gained recognition with A Way Out in 2018, followed by the critically acclaimed It Takes Two in 2021. Their latest game, Split Fiction, released in 2025, is also excellent, though it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as It Takes Two.
One of the All-Time Great Co-Op Games
Looking at the Game of the Year nominations, 2021 wasn’t a particularly strong year for video games – in fact, it was one of the weakest in recent memory. This often happens right after new gaming consoles are released. However, this shouldn’t diminish the achievement of It Takes Two. A Metacritic score of 89 is exceptional, and while it doesn’t always win Game of the Year, it’s widely considered one of the best cooperative games ever made, having sold over 20 million copies. It’s important to remember that It Takes Two is exclusively a co-op experience, offering both local and online play, but no option for playing alone.
It Takes Two Has Never Been Cheaper
It’s never been more affordable to get your hands on It Takes Two, and prices are likely to go back up soon. Plus, it’s included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate! The best part is, only one person needs to buy the game – you can play with a friend online or a family member locally without them needing to purchase it. This makes the effective cost around $4 per person if you split the price with someone, for a game that won Game of the Year!
