Xbox Series X/S Sold More Than 12 Million Units in First 18 Months of Launch Worldwide

Mark Stanley, a leader in the gaming industry, shared on LinkedIn that Microsoft sold over 12 million Xbox Series X/S consoles in the first 18 months after their 2020 launch. This figure includes sales from more than 40 countries where the consoles were available.

Stanley mentioned in his profile that he was responsible for dealing with major disruptions in the supply chain. These issues ultimately caused hardware shortages for Sony and Microsoft in the years that followed.

Stanley also highlighted expanding Xbox into new markets in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa, and Latin America. This involved building local teams, creating distribution partnerships, and navigating regional regulations. These efforts generated over $1 billion in yearly revenue from hardware and Game Pass subscriptions.

Stanley also helped expand Game Pass internationally. This involved Xbox collaborating with local phone companies, stores, and other platform partners, which brought in over 25 million new subscribers worldwide.

Microsoft hasn’t publicly shared exact sales numbers for the Xbox Series X/S consoles. Instead, they report revenue from the consoles alongside other services. While VGChartz estimates that around 34.1 million units have been sold globally as of the end of 2025, these numbers are just estimates because Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed them.

So, Take-Two Interactive predicted around 94 million PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles would be out there by February 2025. Knowing how many PS5s have actually sold, that puts the Xbox Series X/S somewhere between 27 and 29 million units sold as of November 2024, according to those estimates. It’s a pretty interesting number when you think about it!

Console sales have recently dropped significantly. For example, Xbox sales in the US were down 70% compared to last year, marking a record low, according to industry analyst Mat Piscatella. The main reason for this decline seems to be the rising cost of consoles, largely due to price increases implemented in May. The Xbox Series X now costs $599.99, while the digital version is $549.99. Similarly, the Xbox Series S 512 GB model is priced at $379.99, and the 1 TB model at $429.99.

Xbox console sales in the UK dropped significantly in 2025, falling 39% compared to 2024. Industry observers called it the worst year for Xbox consoles to date.
