As an industry analyst, I’ve been tracking the increasing adoption of generative AI in game development, and it’s interesting to see where studios stand. Recently, I learned that Obsidian Entertainment, the RPG developer behind titles like Avowed and The Outer Worlds, isn’t planning to integrate it into their workflow. In a recent interview, studio leaders Josh Sawyer, Kate Dollarhyde, and Leonard Boyarsky discussed their writing processes and how they’ve evolved. Boyarsky even admitted he’d rethink some past speculation about AI writing tools, suggesting they’d quickly become unmanageable. They confirmed they haven’t used generative AI at all. This is particularly noteworthy considering Obsidian’s incredible output.
