When Fable releases, it will be available on PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox Series X|S and PC. However, Forza Horizon 6 won’t be launching on all those platforms at the same time.
This happened because of how long it takes to develop games and some shifts in Microsoft’s plans. They know their PlayStation 5 versions aren’t perfect and are working to make them better.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, admitted that Xbox’s approach to game availability has been inconsistent – some games are exclusive, while others are available on multiple platforms. He assured players that they’re working to improve this and create a more consistent strategy going forward.
Someone asked why the games Fable and the new Double Fine title, Kiln, are releasing on PlayStation 5 immediately, while Forza Horizon 6 is facing delays. Duncan responded that it simply comes down to adjusting development plans to fit evolving business goals.
Sometimes, when plans change, a previously established approach might work, and sometimes it won’t. It seems the decision to not release Forza Horizon 6 on PlayStation 5 at the same time as Xbox and PC was due to the studio not being ready to deliver the port simultaneously. However, the teams working on Fable and Kiln appear to be on track to do so.
Currently, several Xbox games – including Gears of War: E-Day, Clockwork Revolution, and State of Decay 3 – don’t have announced PlayStation 5 releases. It remains to be seen if these games will eventually come to PS5, and if so, whether they’ll be available on the same day as the Xbox and PC versions. This will be a good test of whether Microsoft is becoming more consistent with its multi-platform releases.
Duncan explained that Microsoft’s primary goal for each of its games is simply to reach the widest possible audience. He said it’s usually that straightforward – they focus on getting the game into the hands of as many players as possible.
This aligns with statements from the Fable development team; founder Ryan Fulton explained that Playground Games aims to reach as many players as possible and ensure they have a great experience.
