For fans of historical strategy games like Age of Empires, there’s exciting news! World’s Edge, the development team at Xbox Game Studios, recently revealed their plans for the franchise next year. They announced a new Expansion Pass for Age of Mythology: Retold, which will be available to buy starting December 18th.

This season pass features four new downloadable content packs. One pack, focused on the goddess Demeter, will introduce a major new character to the game’s Greek mythology setting. The Ultimate Fan Pack provides cosmetic items like decorations and icons, and the Blood & Bones pack adds blood effects to battles.

The biggest addition with the Expansion Pass is the Obsidian Mirror, which finally introduces the Aztecs as a playable civilization. Similar to previous expansions like Immortal Pillars and Heavenly Spear, it includes a new 12-mission campaign.

As a researcher following the Age of Empires 2 community, I’m excited to share that the game continues to thrive! A new expansion, called The Last Chieftains, is scheduled for release in February 2026. It will bring three brand-new civilizations to an already incredibly expansive game.

Age of Empires 4 will continue to expand with new content. In Spring 2026, a new expansion will add a campaign centered around China, and another expansion later that year will introduce two additional civilizations, including the Vikings. For players interested in a different experience, Age of Empires: Mobile Edition is also being released on PC.

All Age, all the time

I’ve written before about how much the Age of Empires series means to me – it really shaped my life and interests. It’s fantastic to see the games doing so well! They’re releasing so much new content for the three different titles that it’s honestly hard to keep up, but it’s a great problem to have.

I’m really excited about the Aztecs joining Age of Mythology – the previous expansions, Immortal Pillars and Heavenly Spear, were fantastic. It’s also smart to include optional blood effects with the new content. Hopefully, the developers will consider adding something similar to Age of Empires 4 as well.

I’m also really excited about the upcoming Viking expansion for Age of Empires 4. I especially enjoyed the unique gameplay of the Knights of Cross and Rose DLC, and I’d love to see them introduce similarly creative and interesting faction mechanics with the Vikings.
