Xbox’s First Exclusive Star Wars Game Released 24 Years Ago and It Needs to Be Remastered

Released in 1977, Star Wars quickly became a cultural phenomenon and launched a huge entertainment franchise. For many years, LucasArts was the primary developer and publisher of Star Wars video games, including Star Wars: Obi-Wan, the first Star Wars game exclusive to the Xbox. This 2001 action-adventure game takes place about 32 years before the events of the first Star Wars movie and has a similar feel to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Fans haven’t been able to play Obi-Wan in a long time, and it’s overdue for a remaster or a re-release on current gaming systems.

It’s common now to see updated versions of classic games, and Amazon Games recently announced a new, major Tomb Raider title at the 2025 Game Awards, along with a remastered version of the very first game in the series. Remasters are often profitable, and while they require effort and investment, they’re easier to create than entirely new games because developers start with an existing foundation. Similarly, Star Wars games consistently perform well, so a new Obi-Wan game would likely be a success as well.

Fans Want to See Obi-Wan Remastered on Modern Systems

Okay, so I recently went back and played Star Wars: Obi-Wan, one of the earlier games based on the Prequel Trilogy. Honestly, it got a bit of a mixed reception when it first came out, but it’s way better than most movie tie-in games – seriously, a lot of those are just awful. I actually enjoyed playing through it! What really stood out was the lightsaber combat; it felt pretty innovative for the time and definitely different from other Star Wars games from that era. It’s a lot like Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles – they both have their fans, but only Obi-Wan got the remaster treatment, which is a shame, really.

After Jedi Power Battles received a remastered version in January 2025 – available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, and Xbox Series X|S – fans began asking for a similar update to the game Obi-Wan. Both games share very similar gameplay, environments, and characters, all based on The Phantom Menace. Interestingly, Obi-Wan was originally created for PC, but George Lucas chose to release it on Xbox instead, believing it would run better on that platform.

The game’s release was pushed back, meaning it didn’t launch around the same time as Jedi Power Battles. It eventually came out, enjoyed some popularity, and then faded away. In 2024, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter received a remastered version, but there’s been no announcement about a similar update for Obi-Wan. While it’s not considered one of the best Star Wars games, Obi-Wan was innovative for its lightsaber combat controls using the right stick. Plus, players enjoyed exploring the world established in The Phantom Menace, so a remaster could definitely generate renewed interest.

Obi-Wan Should Follow Jedi Power Battles Into Being Remastered

Remaking or remastering a game is always a risk for publishers, as it takes both time and money. However, there’s a strong pull for players when revisiting games from decades past on today’s consoles, and being a Star Wars title certainly helps. Star Wars: Obi-Wan, like many games created before Disney acquired Lucasfilm, isn’t considered official canon – it exists within the ‘Legends’ storyline – and that’s a big part of why fans love it. With Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic being another popular ‘Legends’ game, Disney should consider remastering more non-canon titles, and Obi-Wan would be a great place to start.
