Xbox’s Most Divisive Game of 2025 Is Reportedly Getting a Sequel

Despite a strong year for Xbox with popular releases like DOOM: The Dark Ages, The Outer Worlds 2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and Grounded 2, one game proved particularly divisive. Surprisingly, that same game—which received a lot of negative feedback—is now confirmed to be getting a sequel.

So, I was reading that Chris Avellone, who used to write for Obsidian, is saying they’re already thinking about a sequel to Avowed. The game came out in February and critics seemed to like it pretty well – it got around an 80 on Metacritic. But players were a little more divided, giving it a 6.8/10. It wasn’t bad, exactly, but a lot of us felt like something was missing or it just didn’t quite hit the mark.

Recently, former Obsidian employee Avellone shared on social media that a sequel to Avowed is likely in development. He also suggested that The Outer Worlds 3 is not currently planned. While neither Xbox nor Obsidian has officially confirmed this, Avellone’s past work at the company suggests he has inside knowledge of their future projects.

When Would This Xbox Sequel Release?

Even if Avowed 2 is currently being developed, it probably won’t be released for several years. Considering the studio’s past release schedules, 2030 or 2031 seems like the most realistic timeframe – a similar amount of time passed between the original The Outer Worlds and its sequel. It’s also possible that the game could be cancelled altogether, so it’s best not to expect it too soon.

Obsidian Entertainment is staying busy with ongoing support for several games. Specifically, both The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2 are receiving continued updates and are expected to get new content releases in 2026 and for the foreseeable future.
