Xbox’s new gaming AI companion now rolling out to ALMOST all players — consoles still have to wait a little longer

Microsoft’s Copilot is central to the company’s current push into artificial intelligence, and now that’s extending to Xbox gaming. A version called “Gaming Copilot” has been tested by Xbox Insiders for the past few months.

As a researcher following the development of Xbox’s Gaming Copilot, I’m excited to share that it’s now rolling out to gamers on Windows PCs and mobile devices! It’s still labeled as a ‘Beta’ version for now, and unfortunately, it won’t be available in mainland China just yet. For PC gamers, you can access it through the Xbox Game Bar, and mobile users will be able to try it out via the Xbox app for Android and iOS starting in October.

The Gaming Copilot uses voice control and learns from your gameplay, achievements, and history to offer helpful advice and suggestions, and it has the potential to be a valuable addition to the Xbox experience. However, console gamers will need to be patient-Microsoft is still refining the Copilot for handhelds and consoles and will release it at a later date.

What can Xbox Gaming Copilot actually do?

If you’ve used Microsoft Copilot – the AI tool powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT that comes with Windows 11 – you’ll quickly understand how this version, designed specifically for gaming, works.

Gaming Copilot connects to your Xbox account to learn about your gaming activity – things like your play history and achievements. It can even see what you’re currently playing, and uses all this information to help answer your questions about games.

Xbox’s Gaming Copilot can help you with all sorts of things! It can give you step-by-step instructions for tough levels, offer clues for puzzles and boss fights, suggest games you might like based on what you already play, tell you how to unlock achievements, and even help you decide what to play or achieve next.

We’ve all quickly Googled gaming questions on our phones. Gaming Copilot simply makes that process easier and faster. It also uses your gaming background to give you more helpful and personalized recommendations.

Whether Xbox’s Gaming Copilot is truly helpful depends on how people use it. However, Xbox has made significant improvements during testing – it now better understands what’s happening in games, responds to voice commands more naturally, and offers more helpful in-game tips. With the “Beta” label, we can expect it to continue getting even better.

At least one improvement we know is coming at some point is even wider access on more devices.

When will Gaming Copilot come to Xbox consoles?

Gaming Copilot (still in Beta) is now available for Xbox users age 18 and up in all supported regions (except mainland China). It’s starting with the PC Xbox Game Bar app, and will expand to the Android and iOS mobile apps in October.

You might be asking where the Xbox Series X and S fit in. It seems Xbox is currently focused on improving Gaming Copilot for handheld gaming devices (like the new Xbox Ally) and consoles, and they plan to launch the updated version soon.

I’ve noticed that gaming handhelds are essentially small Windows PCs, so Microsoft is making their Gaming Copilot available on those devices starting today. It sounds like they’re also thinking about how to tailor the experience specifically for handhelds, perhaps with a better interface and improved performance. This is especially important for Xbox consoles, since those rely almost entirely on controllers and don’t have a lot of extra processing power to dedicate to new features unless they really add to the gaming experience.

I’m wondering if Xbox plans to bring Gaming Copilot to Xbox Cloud Gaming at some point, but they haven’t announced anything about that yet.

I almost didn’t bother trying Gaming Copilot, since I don’t usually find AI assistants like the regular Copilot helpful. However, I frequently look things up on my phone while playing games, so if Gaming Copilot is fast, simple to use, and provides reliable information, I think I’d use it. It would also be great if it could suggest which games from my large collection I should play next.

Putting my personal opinions aside, it’s clear Microsoft is heavily invested in AI, so Copilot coming to Xbox doesn’t really surprise me. As an analyst, I’ve been watching this move closely and it aligns perfectly with their overall strategy.
