As a long-time gaming enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news about XDefiant shutting down comes as no surprise but still leaves a bitter taste. The first-person shooter genre is fiercely competitive, and breaking into this domain requires more than just a solid game.
It has been confirmed that XDefiant, the latest first-person shooter game from Ubisoft, is closing down. The first-person shooter genre is vast and highly popular within gaming. A few key franchises, such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, hold a significant portion of the market share. Titles like Valorant have emerged over the past decade, but breaking into this competitive space has been challenging due to games like Call of Duty’s strong influence on players. Ubisoft introduced a new FPS game called XDefiant earlier this year following extensive player testing, but unfortunately, it failed to draw a substantial audience over an extended period.
In a bid to challenge Call of Duty, XDefiant was launched under the leadership of ex-Call of Duty producer Mark Rubin. However, despite its initial ambitions, XDefiant didn’t survive for long and faced significant challenges when it clashed with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. After persistent speculation about the game’s potential closure, Ubisoft has now confirmed that as of today, new downloads for XDefiant are no longer available. The servers will be shut down in June 2025. Mark Rubin himself announced this on Twitter and mentioned that the team is still working towards releasing content for the game’s third season, but after that point, there will be no further updates to the game.
Individuals who bought the Ultimate Founders Pack of XDefiant and those who made in-game purchases within the past month will receive a refund, with the money being returned over the next eight weeks. Regrettably, Ubisoft San Francisco and Osaka studios are facing closure, affecting around 177 employees. Approximately half of XDefiant’s team will be reassigned to different projects. Stephen Totilo reported that this sudden cancellation of XDefiant is due to a drop in the number of players.
In summary, it’s quite a setback for Ubisoft as XDefiant, a game meant to challenge Call of Duty and strengthen their live service portfolio beyond Rainbow Six Siege (entering its tenth year), has faced challenges. Its troubles, evident over the past few months, might have been exacerbated by the widespread availability of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Xbox Game Pass. Although Ubisoft initially dismissed rumors about XDefiant’s cancellation in September, it’s plausible that these considerations were underway for some time and recently finalized. At launch, XDefiant was criticized by some players for appearing rushed, potentially to outdo this year’s Call of Duty and establish a presence in the shooter genre ahead of time.
