While the show is likely keeping other cameos a secret, one character is noticeably missing from the previews. The recent trailer hints at a sad outcome for this character, and it could be a major error that causes the spinoff to fail before it even starts.
Will Y: Marshals Kill Off Monica Dutton?
The newest trailer for Y: Marshals (also known as Marshals) hints at a key character in Kayce Dutton’s story: Monica Long-Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille. Monica is Kayce’s wife and a major source of hope for him, offering an escape from the violent world of the Duttons. In fact, Kayce first left the Dutton family because of her, and she’s ultimately the reason he chooses to return the ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation at the end of the series.
Kelsey Asbille hasn’t been confirmed to return for the series, and with the premiere date of March 1st approaching, her absence is becoming increasingly noticeable. It now seems unlikely she’ll be part of the main cast, and even a brief appearance seems doubtful. Unfortunately, recent promotional materials for Y: Marshals suggest the show might actually highlight her character’s absence, making it even more significant.
The latest trailer for Y: Marshals strongly suggests that Monica Long-Dutton is in serious danger. We see Kayce visibly upset, seemingly grieving a loss. A brief shot of a doctor covering someone with a sheet adds to the suspense, though the person’s face isn’t shown. The trailer hints that this tragedy is what motivates Kayce to become a Marshal. Knowing Yellowstone, fans suspect this loss would have to be someone very close to him to have such a profound effect.
It appears the new show Y: Marshals will likely kill off Monica Long-Dutton in its first episode. Based on previews, her death will happen between the end of Yellowstone and the start of Y: Marshals, and Kelsey Asbille probably won’t return to play the character. This could be a significant error that the show never overcomes.
Yellowstone Is Making a Major Mistake With Y: Marshals
Removing Monica Long-Dutton from the story would be a significant error for the new Y: Marshals series, especially so early on. Monica has become a beloved and strong female character over five seasons, and audiences would miss her. It would be a waste of Kelsey Asbille’s excellent performance on Yellowstone to eliminate her character without proper closure. Knowing her fate would also make rewatching Yellowstone less enjoyable.
Monica’s death would be a terrible blow, especially considering Kayce’s journey has always been about deciding where his loyalties lie – with his family’s troubled past or the new life he’s created. His parents and siblings embody the painful history he’s trying to escape, while Monica and their son, Tate, represent the peaceful future he desires.
Throughout the series, Kayce wrestles with a difficult decision, ultimately understanding he can’t have both the ranch and his family. A vision warns him that keeping the ranch would destroy his relationship with Monica and Tate, which is why he sells it back to Thomas Rainwater, prioritizing his family’s future. Killing Monica at this point would be a pointless and frustrating reset of his character, serving only to create more storylines.
Taylor Sheridan and CBS need to tread carefully with the future of the Yellowstone universe. If the storylines in the new shows diminish the impact of the original series, it might be best to end the franchise. While Monica Dutton’s fate remains unconfirmed—and likely won’t be revealed until the premiere of Marshals—the latest trailers suggest fans should be worried about what’s in store for this beloved Yellowstone character.
