The new show Marshals, set to air in 2026, will bring back Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, along with other familiar faces from Yellowstone. However, Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife Monica, won’t be returning. After learning more about how Kayce’s relationship with his son Tate will be featured in the new series, I feel more confident in my idea about what happened to Monica.
What Y: Marshals’ Showrunner Said About Kayce And Tate
This new series, a spin-off of Yellowstone, will be the first time viewers see what the Dutton family is up to after the original show concluded in 2024. Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill will return as their characters Rainwater, Mo, and Tate. According to showrunner Spencer Hudnut, a lot will have happened in the year between the end of Yellowstone and the beginning of Y: Marshals, particularly in the relationship between Kayce and his son, Tate. He explained that:
The break he took after his last show gave him time to deal with personal issues and prioritize being a dad. He’s really transformed as a person.
Hudnut announced that the new show, Y: Marshals, will be set roughly a year after the events of Yellowstone. According to the showrunner, Kayce will continue living at East Camp and will be spending more quality time with his son, Tate, than usual.
A major theme of the story is Kayce having the chance to be more present at home and grow as a father. He’s traditionally focused on providing for and protecting his son, often leaving the day-to-day parenting to his wife. Now, with more time at home, we’re seeing a stronger connection develop between Kayce and his son, and Kayce is starting to recognize more and more of himself in his child.
When I saw this quote, my first thought was about Kelsey Asbille – we haven’t gotten confirmation she’ll be in the new season. I also noticed the trailer for Y: Marshals didn’t include her character. Considering both of those things, I’m starting to suspect Kayce’s wife might be dead, and that’s why she’s not appearing in the show.
My Theory Is That Monica Died
Luke Grimes has mentioned that while some characters we know will return in Y: Marshals, the show will allow his character, Kayce, more independence. Combined with comments from showrunner David Hudnut about Kayce becoming a more active parent to Tate, it strongly suggests that Monica will no longer be part of the story.
Given how close Beth is to Tate and Kayce, if they were to split up, I’d expect they’d still work together to raise their child. Also, for the Duttons to make such a huge change in their lives and pursue a new career path, I believe something significant must have happened to push them in that direction.
Based on what’s happening in the show, I believe Monica has died. Kayce seems to be raising his son alone now, and is much more involved than he used to be. While Kayce always cared about Tate, Monica previously handled most of the parenting, so it looks like she’s no longer around.
It will be fascinating to watch how Kayce and Tate cope with this loss, as it will undoubtedly impact both their lives and their connection with each other. I’m eager to find out if my prediction proves correct.
You can see if my predictions come true and continue following Kayce Dutton’s journey by watching the first episode of Y: Marshals on CBS this Sunday, March 1st at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. If you miss it, you can stream it the next day on Paramount+.
