As a seasoned researcher with years of experience in the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, I find myself constantly reminded of the old adage: “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” The recent hack on Yat Siu’s account, the co-founder and chair of Animoca Brands, serves as yet another grim reminder of the persistent threats that lurk in this digital frontier.
It has been verified that Yat Siu, the co-founder and chairman of Animoca Brands, suffered a hacking incident. The purpose seems to have been to publicize a false token on platform X, making it appear as one more instance in a series of cyberattacks targeting crypto X accounts.
Regrettably, it appears that Siu’s social media account was taken over by unauthorized individuals. As stated on Dec. 26, the token launch on Solana, which was originally claimed to be genuine, was actually carried out by the hackers.
Previously, an earlier post from Siu’s account (which has since been removed) featured a link to the memecoin launcher Pump.fun for a token called Animoca Brands (MOCA). This token shares its name with the company and its associated Mocaverse NFT collection.
As a researcher, I’ve found it plausible that Siu might have been tricked by a malicious email disguised as a phishing attack from a cybercriminal associated with a series of prior hacks and deceptive token launches, which have collectively amassed approximately $500,000 over the past month.
ZachXBT pointed out that the fraudulent MOCA token was issued from the same account as counterfeit tokens previously distributed across hacked cryptocurrency platforms with similar focus.
After being posted on Siu’s account, the fraudulent MOCA token briefly reached a high of approximately $36,700, but almost immediately plummeted in worth, dropping to about $7,700 in market capitalization, as reported by Birdeye.
Currently, the token’s value hovers approximately at $6,200, and the previously existing trading activity seems to have vanished or significantly reduced.
Previously, ZachXBT clarified that a hacker managed to gain access to over fifteen user accounts on platform X by disguising themselves as representatives from the X team and sending fraudulent copyright violation warnings.
The alerts instilled a strong feeling of immediacy and deceived the victims of hacks into accessing a fraudulent website. On this site, they unwittingly changed their X account passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, details which were then forwarded to the attacker.
The initial reported event occurred on November 26, involving the account of Bitcoin infrastructure service provider RuneMine, while the most recent incident (before the suspected attack on Siu) targeted the account of a cryptocurrency trading video platform called Kick, which happened on December 24.
