Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, will be separating from Kelsey Asbille’s character, Monica Long, in the new Yellowstone spinoff, Y: Marshals. Some believe this storyline change could actually be a good move for the series. Although the original Yellowstone, led by Kevin Costner, concluded after its fifth season, the world of the show will continue with additional spinoffs and new stories.
In addition to the new series following Beth and Rip from Yellowstone, another show will continue the Dutton family’s story, focusing on Kayce. At the end of Yellowstone Season 5, Kayce, along with Tate and Monica, moved to East Camp on the ranch. But it seems his plans have shifted as the new series, Y:, begins.
Monica Dutton Isn’t Joining Kayce Dutton In Y: Marshals Season 1
Kayce is preparing for a new chapter in his life with Tate and Monica. However, not all of the Dutton family will be featured in his new show, Y: Marshals Season 1, creating challenges for him. Actress Kelsey Asbille, who plays Monica Long, will not be appearing in the series alongside Luke Grimes.
I was so saddened to see what happened to Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille. She was Kayce’s wife and Tate’s mother, and honestly, it feels like her story is completely over, rather than just a small part of the new Y: Marshals series. It makes sense that Tate, played by Breck Merrill, will be a regular cast member, and I would have expected Monica to be, too, if she were still going to be involved. It just doesn’t seem like she will be at all.
The actors who originally played Thomas Rainwater and Mo will return for the new series. As Kayce’s closest advisors, their presence is welcome, especially since Dutton will be facing fresh challenges without Monica by his side.
It’s unknown why Kayce’s wife isn’t with him, and the show isn’t giving us many clues about what’s next for him. Something significant has clearly created a rift within the Dutton family. This could mean Monica has died before the events of Y: Marshals, or that she and Kayce have finally split up after years of difficulties on Yellowstone, though a separation seems less probable.
Kayce Dutton Is Looking For a New Path In Y: Marshals Season 1
Although a full trailer for the upcoming CBS show, Y: Marshals, hasn’t been released yet, short previews are now airing on the network. In these previews, Dutton explains he’s searching for a fresh start and a new direction, hinting at what’s to come in his next adventure.
Kayce might be talking about his new job as a US Marshal, which seems like a natural fit given his experience with law enforcement and ranch life. But his comment about a fresh start likely refers to something happening in his personal life, possibly related to Monica, that’s motivated him to make a change.
Whether or not Monica is involved, Kayce is heading in a completely different direction in Y: Marshals, signaling a fresh start for the Dutton family. This could also mean new romances, as viewers will see Kayce navigating life on his own – something he hasn’t done in over ten years – and possibly searching for a partner.
Tatanka Means and his fellow actors will play Miles and Pete Calvin, two of Kayce’s fellow marshals. Arielle Kebbel and Ash Santos are joining the cast as Belle and Andrea, bringing new characters to the Yellowstone universe and offering Kayce support, possibly even leading to a new romantic relationship as he and Monica work through their issues.
Monica’s Absence In Y: Marshals Could Actually Be A Good Thing
Although Monica played a key role in the original series and Kayce’s storyline, many viewers didn’t particularly like her character. Therefore, her not appearing in the new show, Y: Marshals, might actually be welcomed by fans of the Yellowstone universe.
It’s unclear if problems in her marriage with Kayce or simply a lack of compelling storylines led to Monica’s diminished role, but her limited appearance in the new spinoff might be connected. Though she won’t be prominently featured, Monica will still be felt through Kayce’s continued processing of their relationship.
The upcoming episode will likely reveal what happened to Monica. Earlier in the season, the Duttons talked about wanting another child, which raises the possibility that Monica might die during childbirth. This would create a painful situation for Kayce and Tate to cope with, and it fits the pattern of tragedy that often affects young women on Yellowstone.
The new show Marshals will debut on CBS in Spring 2026, with episodes airing every Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
