Yes, Pokemon Pokopia Will Have Its Own Pokedex, But It’s A Bit Different

The first new Pokémon game of 2026, Pokémon Pokopia, is launching soon! It’s a unique life simulation game and will be the first title available exclusively on the new Switch 2 console. I was initially unsure about the game when it was announced last year, but after playing it, it’s become one of my most anticipated releases. If you don’t usually enjoy relaxing, cozy games, you might be wondering how much Pokopia will actually feel like a Pokémon game. Good news: the game is bringing back the beloved Pokedex in a fresh and engaging way.

Since you play as a Pokémon instead of a trainer, I wondered how much the game, Pokémon Pokopia, would focus on collecting them all. I was happy to discover my character, a Human Ditto, received a Pokedex! It’s not quite the same as in other Pokémon games, but it still helps you keep track of the new Pokémon friends you’ve made. Here’s what I’ve found out about the Pokedex in Pokémon Pokopia so far.

In Pokemon Pokopia, You’ve Gotta Friend ‘Em All

While you won’t be directly catching Pokémon in Pokopia, you’ll still discover lots of new creatures. As Ditto, you’ll work to restore the island and build homes for Pokémon. Each new habitat you create will attract different Pokémon, and they’ll all contribute to your goal of building a perfect Pokémon paradise. This game features a special version of the Pokédex to help you keep track of everything.

The Ditto Pokedex is designed to help you learn about the Pokemon you meet. Instead of just showing stats and moves, it provides useful details about each Pokemon’s personality and what they’re good at – like where they like to live and what skills they have. Some Pokemon will even teach Ditto new abilities, and others will directly help you build and improve your home. This Pokedex works like the helpful in-game apps you often see in cozy games, giving you a quick and easy way to remember which Pokemon can assist with different tasks.

The Pokdex in Pokopia is super helpful for keeping track of all the Poke Pals I’ve collected and which ones I still need to find. It really brings back that classic “gotta catch ‘em all” feeling from the main Pokemon games, even though you don’t actually use Poke Balls here. I didn’t get to spend a ton of time with the single-player mode yet, so I only got a quick look at what the Pokdex can do, but I’m really excited to explore it more!

Pokemon Pokopia‘s Human Artifacts Are a Mystery I Can’t Wait to Solve

I’m really looking forward to going back to Pokopia, especially because of the story. The island where Human Ditto appears is covered in remnants of a lost human civilization. Even though all the humans are gone, Ditto discovers an old, decaying Pokemon Center and PC. Surprisingly, a trainer’s Pokedex is still functional and Ditto can use it! As you explore, you also find fragments of notes from the human world, which might reveal what happened to make the island so deserted.

Everything I’ve seen so far hints at a larger story, and I’m really looking forward to it. I was already excited about the relaxing gameplay of Pokemon Pokopia, but a potentially touching story makes me even more eager to discover what’s hidden within the game, beyond just collecting Pokemon in the Pokedex. My initial time with Pokopia only revealed a small part of the bigger picture, and I’m left with lots of questions I can’t wait to answer. Combining that mystery with the daily tasks and Pokedex completion could make Pokopia one of the best Pokemon spinoffs in years.
