Yona of the Dawn Creator Shares New Look At Beloved Character After Manga Finale

Kusanagi Mizuho’s popular historical fantasy manga, Yona of the Dawn, first appeared in Hana to Yume magazine in 2009 and quickly gained a devoted fanbase thanks to its compelling story and beautiful artwork. After the anime’s first season ended in 2015, fans have eagerly hoped for a continuation. Now, along with the announcement of the manga’s upcoming finale, it’s been confirmed that a sequel season is in production! While details are still scarce, the news has thrilled fans, especially as the final manga chapter will be released on December 19th, 2025.

Just under a month after the manga ended, I saw Mizuho, the creator, post a new drawing of Shin-Ah on her X account. It was to celebrate his birthday! Shin-Ah is a really popular character – he’s a key part of the story and one of Yona’s best friends. He was the second Dragon Warrior to join her journey and has stuck by her side ever since. The sketch was beautiful, and it quickly spread online, with fans loving the birthday tribute. Mizuho did apologize that it was a bit rough, explaining she was short on time.

Yona of the Dawn Has Major Plans For 2026

Season 2 picks up Yona’s story after she’s assembled the four Dragon Warriors, as foretold in legend. She faces a difficult choice that will impact not only her own future, but also the fate of Hak and the entire kingdom. However, making this decision is complicated by her unresolved feelings about Soo-Won’s past betrayal. The season will follow Yona and her companions as they travel throughout and beyond the Kouka Kingdom, working to build a better future for everyone.

Although the main storyline is finished, the series will include an extra story in the last volume. Mizuho, the author, expressed disappointment that she couldn’t wrap everything up in Volume 47, which comes out in Japan on February 20, 2026. Because the final Volume 48 has space for more content, it will feature this side story, probably showing what happens with the characters after the main story ends. A special artbook with 64 pages (A5 size) will also be released alongside Volume 47. Despite the added story, the final volume will be shorter than the others, containing just two chapters plus this extra, with the release date of the extra still to be announced.

You can watch the first season of the anime on Crunchyroll, or purchase it on Apple TV and Prime Video. The first 45 volumes of the manga are available as both physical copies and digital downloads on the official Viz Media website. We don’t yet know when the volumes after #45 will be released in English, but we may get an announcement later this year.
