A lot of Xbox fans were disappointed to learn that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is becoming more expensive. The top-level Game Pass subscription now costs $30, which is $10 more than before. This change happened soon after Xbox announced a second price increase for their consoles in just a few months, and it prompted many subscribers to cancel their Ultimate memberships yesterday. Although the new price went into effect on Microsoft’s website on October 1st, some players believe there’s a way to renew at the older, lower price for another month.
Most Xbox Game Pass members probably created their online accounts through Microsoft, as it’s easily accessible on both consoles and PC. But there’s always been another method for getting or giving a Game Pass subscription. Several stores that sell games, such as GameStop, Amazon, and Best Buy, sell gift cards that give you either 1 or 3 months of Game Pass. As of 2:00 PM EDT on October 2nd, these retailers hadn’t raised their prices, despite Microsoft already increasing theirs.
Many Major Retailers Still Offering Game Pass Ultimate at Former Price (For Now)
So, I was checking out the official Xbox Game Pass signup site, and it’s showing Game Pass Ultimate at the new price of $29.99 a month. But then I looked at the 1 Month Membership at a bunch of different gaming retailers, and it’s telling a completely different story! It looks like you can still snag another month of Ultimate at the original price, which is a sweet deal if you’re looking to save some money.
GameStop continues to sell the Xbox Game Pass 1 Month Ultimate Membership gift card for $19.99 ($18.99 for Pro members). They aren’t the only retailer doing so; Amazon also hasn’t changed its price, still listing the one-month digital code for $19.99. Best Buy and Target are the same, offering the Ultimate membership digital code for $19.99. All three retailers are still pricing it at this amount. Options for 3 Month memberships remain at $59.99, too.
Essentially, although purchasing through Microsoft costs $30, you can potentially get an additional 3 months of Ultimate at the previous, lower price by buying through these retailers. This is great for gamers, but it raises the question… how long will this deal remain available? And, to be honest, the situation is a bit complex.
GameStop Vows to Maintain $19.99 Price Point on Game Pass Ultimate
Since the price change happened very recently, you might think it’s a mistake. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, or at least not for all customers. GameStop announced on social media that they intend to continue selling the Game Pass Ultimate membership for $19.99. So, GameStop is deliberately keeping the original price, at least for the time being. It appears this is a conscious decision.
We will continue to sell Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $19.99/month in-store and online.

As of right now, GameStop is the only store that’s officially said they’ll keep the price of Game Pass gift cards at $19.99. But I’ve checked around, and other gaming stores selling these cards haven’t raised their prices yet, either. That makes me think they’re planning to stick with the current rate for a while. It’s probably because they already got a bunch of membership codes from Microsoft at the old price. So, if that’s true, we’ll likely see that sweet $19.99 price as long as their stock of those older-priced codes lasts. Hopefully that’s a good long while!
Currently, you might be able to save $10 on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate by purchasing a code from a gaming retailer. There’s a chance Xbox could begin adding that $10 cost when you redeem these codes, but that hasn’t started happening just yet. It’s also possible this is a temporary situation.
