Praise Kier: Britt Lower is a winner at the Emmys 2025.
At the awards ceremony on September 14th, the star of *Severance* won the award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She was victorious over Kathy Bates (*Matlock*), Bella Ramsey (*The Last of Us*), Britt Lower (*Severance*), Keri Russell (*The Diplomat*), and Sharon Horgan (*Bad Sisters*). (Check here to see photos of the red carpet arrivals and here for the full list of winners.)
On stage at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, Britt revealed a note seemingly connected to her character, Helly R. It simply said, “LET ME OUT.”
It’s an honor just to be considered with these amazing artists,” she said. “I truly share this award with my cast and crew – their incredible work is what makes mine possible.
After expressing gratitude to her family and close friends, Britt concluded her speech with a final nod to the character she had played.
“Thank you for Helly R.,” she added, “for choosing me.”
Portraying Helly R. and her alter ego, Helena Eagan, was incredibly challenging. As Britt described the two vastly different characters, they were essentially fighting a battle within the same person.
As a huge fan, I was really struck by how the show let us experience things *through* Helly’s eyes. It was amazing to see her form these genuinely human connections with Mark, Irving, and even Burt, despite being on the severed floor. It really highlighted how different things were for her compared to Helena, whose scenes with her dad felt so cold and empty. It just reinforced this idea that hurt people tend to repeat those patterns, and that lack of love can carry through generations.
For Britt, that means breaking down the “many masks” Helena wears.
She described an internal struggle between a critical voice and a more vulnerable, childlike part of herself. She explained that while our ego is meant to protect us, it can sometimes hold us back from truly living freely.
Britt added, “It’s like a Russian doll of masks.”
