Larian Studios, the creators of the hit game Baldur’s Gate 3, recently shared new information about their next project, simply called Divinity. Baldur’s Gate 3 was a massive success in 2023, exceeding expectations with its intricate gameplay and captivating story. While Larian had a dedicated fanbase before, Baldur’s Gate 3 brought them widespread recognition and earned them the prestigious Game of the Year award. Now, it seems players won’t have to wait much longer to experience Larian’s next adventure.
Following the success of their recent game, Larian Studios announced they weren’t planning a direct sequel like Baldur’s Gate 4. Instead, they hinted at a new and exciting project. While continuing the Baldur’s Gate series would have been the easier path, the developers confirmed they’d use their resources to try something different. At The Game Awards, they revealed that new project: a new installment in their acclaimed Divinity RPG series. Though revealed only with a cinematic trailer and no actual gameplay footage, the announcement still generated a lot of excitement among fans.
Divinity Will Release in Early Access
Larian Studios, in a Bloomberg interview, shared initial details about their next RPG, Divinity. Like Baldur’s Gate 3, it will be a turn-based game, and they plan to release it as an early access title. While a 2026 release isn’t planned, 2027 is a possibility – which is surprisingly soon, considering many games shown with impressive trailers are still years from launch.
That’s likely partly correct. The complete version of Divinity is still quite a ways off. Larian Studios has been working on the game for two years and aims to finish it in another three to four, considering Baldur’s Gate 3 took six years to develop. To speed things up, the studio is using AI for tasks like creating concept art, making presentations, and adding temporary text. However, the final game itself won’t include any AI-generated content; it’s just being used to improve efficiency during development.
While we wait for the new game, the team recently surprised everyone with a remastered version of Divinity: Original Sin 2. It’s considered one of the best role-playing games available, and it’s a fantastic way to experience the work of the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3.
