You Probably Had No Idea One Of Marvel’s Coolest Street Heroes Is Joining The MCU

People aren’t paying enough attention to the fact that a really cool Marvel hero who usually operates on the streets is about to appear in a live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe project, thanks to the upcoming Vision Quest story. Marvel has been slowly building out this part of its universe for a while now, and Vision’s new show will add another interesting, yet often overlooked, piece to the bigger picture.

For a while now, Spider-Man has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The current Multiverse Saga has successfully brought back fan favorites like Daredevil and The Punisher from the old Netflix Marvel series, with Jessica Jones also on her way. Plus, other MCU movies and shows have introduced new characters like Moon Knight, Echo, Shang-Chi, and the original White Tiger.

Last August, Todd Stashwick, known for his roles in 12 Monkeys and Star Trek: Picard season 3, was announced as the actor playing Paladin. Given Paladin’s background in the comics, Stashwick’s character is a subtle but potentially significant addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and could play a major, and exciting, role in future Marvel projects.

Paladin In Marvel Comics Explained

First appearing in Daredevil #150 in 1978, Paladin is a straightforward, costumed private investigator who is mainly driven by profit. He accepts jobs from a wide range of people in the comic world and isn’t afraid to fight superheroes if they stand between him and a paycheck.

Despite his methods, Paladin isn’t a villain. He simply believes in a more realistic way to fight crime, one that allows him to earn a living while being a hero. This approach has understandably led him to become an anti-hero. He’s clashed with heroes like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Daredevil on several occasions.

Paladin stories often feature a contrasting dynamic where he clashes with other heroes, playing the role of a tough, uncompromising figure. While many disagree with his methods and find him hard to get along with, they’re often compelled to team up with him when the situation demands it. These collaborations are usually brief, but Marvel has occasionally attempted to make Paladin a long-term team member, such as during his time with Heroes for Hire in the early 2010s.

When it comes to combat, Paladin has some enhanced strength and is a skilled martial artist. However, he generally prefers to fight from afar using a custom stun gun. This reflects his approach, as even though he’s an anti-hero, Paladin usually avoids killing his enemies.

Like His Comic Counterpart, The MCU’s Paladin Can Be One Of Its Coolest Street Heroes

I was honestly surprised to see Paladin show up in Vision Quest as his first appearance in the MCU, but it always felt like he’d eventually fit into this universe somehow. He’s not a hugely famous character, I’ll admit, but he’s got a really interesting vibe and some unique qualities that I think could make him a fan favorite as Marvel continues to build things out on screen.

Todd Stashwick, known for roles in shows like SyFy’s 12 Monkeys, consistently demonstrates he can convincingly portray characters with the key qualities of a Paladin – a strong personal code of ethics and unwavering self-assurance.

Paladin’s rough and mercenary personality creates funny moments when he interacts with Marvel’s traditional heroes, and the MCU could benefit from exploring those dynamics. This could involve pairing him with Vision or having him meet Daredevil in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.

Marvel has a compelling opportunity to explore the limits of Paladin’s principles by teaming him up with the Punisher, who is known for his extreme violence. Depending on the outcome of the Vision Quest storyline, Paladin could become an important part of future adventures featuring Marvel’s expanding group of street-level heroes.
