“You think you’ll have four more Olympics, but stuff happens and you might not”

As someone who had the privilege of being a part of Team GB and winning silver with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles at the 2012 London Olympics, I cherish that memory deeply. It was an experience like no other, where everyone came together, supporting each other regardless of their sport. Winning that medal was not just about me, but adding to the collective tally and being a part of something bigger.

Could you share your most vivid recollection of claiming the silver medal alongside Andy Murray in the mixed doubles tournament at the 2012 London Olympics?

At the event, every person joined forces, regardless of the specific sport they participated in. The camaraderie among Team GB was remarkable, making me feel integrated into the collective experience. My goal wasn’t just to win my own medal but to contribute to the team’s overall achievement – a feeling that was novel for me.

What’s your all-time most memorable Olympics moment?

Born to Australian parents, my earliest recollection is of Sydney 2000 and witnessing Cathy Freeman carry the Olympic torch. An Australian icon before the Games, she bore immense pressure to secure victory in the 400m race, which she accomplished. I would also mention “Super Saturday” in 2012, an extraordinary day filled with excitement. That day, I was at Wimbledon and could hear thunderous cheers from those watching on their phones. A memory that remains indelibly etched in my mind.

Where do you keep your silver medal?

The item is located at my parents’ residence in Australia. Since my mother has a habit of concealing items inside her shoes, it’s unlikely that the object has been misplaced. However, I can’t provide an precise location for it.

How much sport do you do nowadays?

Reflecting on my recent running experience, I can’t help but feel a mix of disappointment and determination. Just the other day, I lined up at the starting line of a half-marathon with a strong determination to cross the finish line under the two-hour mark. My training had gone well, and I was confident in my ability to meet this goal.

Do you have any advice for today’s athletes? How best can they look after themselves?

Reflecting on my own experiences, I can’t help but encourage you to immerse yourself fully in every moment of this extraordinary opportunity. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure and focus solely on your performance or goals, but trust me, the memories you create along the way are just as valuable.
