In anime, food is often portrayed as being more mouthwateringly appealing than actual food, except for times when it’s shown to come to life for combat. However, there are certain dishes in anime that appear so unappetizing, resembling vague blobs and exuding foul purple auras. Despite some foods like Brock’s “jelly donuts” from Pokémon being surprisingly notable, there are many dishes in anime that should never be attempted to recreate, not only within the shows themselves but also in real life. It’s better to leave them as they are, merely animated delicacies.
Although these foods are undeniably revolting in their own distinct ways, each one has a unique degree of repulsiveness. Some are merely unpalatable due to their taste, while others raise eyebrows with their concepts. Still others are so vile in taste, concept, preparation, intention, morality, and just about every conceivable aspect that viewing them on screen could be considered punishment enough. While some characters might harbor desires for revenge against enemies that call for cold-blooded retribution, these culinary creations should not be wished upon even the most detested adversary.
K-On!: Black Blancmange
To begin with, Tsumugi Kotobuki’s blancmange veers from the typical, appealing image of this dessert. Unlike its sweet and creamy counterparts, her version boasts an umami, salty taste due to the addition of kelp and a type of dark brown seaweed called hijiki, which gives it a deep, somewhat mysterious appearance.
Tsumugi’s friends find the dessert somewhat unusual and are hesitant to eat it, but at least Tsumugi prepared it with a kind intention – to help everyone prepare for a marathon by providing iron minerals and reducing the risk of anemia.
Gintama: Hijikata Special
In the animated series “Gintama”, Toushirou Hijikata holds a high-ranking position as the Deputy Commander of a special police force. One might expect someone in such a prestigious role to have sophisticated tastes, but not Hijikata! His fondness for mayonnaise is far from subtle. In fact, once, when an assassin followed him to a restaurant with the intention of attacking, the assassin was instead diverted by sheer horror and revulsion upon seeing Hijikata order the Hijikata Special – essentially, a bowl of mayonnaise.
However, when Gintoki selected the Gintoki-don (rice with sweet beans), the debate heated up between them over which dish was better. Despite being dispatched to eliminate Hijikata, it’s challenging not to feel empathy as he fainted after being forced by both Hijikata and Gintoki to sample their dubious concoctions.
Gintama can be streamed on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
Food Wars!: Peanut Butter or Honey Squid
In the world of “Food Wars!”, it’s Sōma Yukihira who dreamt up this peculiar dish. While the concept of blending sweet and savory isn’t entirely outlandish, the way it’s been prepared leaves much to be desired. Despite Sōma’s penchant for culinary innovation, this particular concoction leans towards the unusual, growing increasingly unappetizing with each attempt.
The unusual calamari dish, featuring peanut butter, honey, yogurt, coffee-infused peanuts, and a habanero sweet and sour sauce with mint variations, was created with a twist: it’s intended as a form of culinary retribution. This unconventional mix of flavors is so intensely repellent that those who have tried it feel they were disrespected not just by the dish, but by the squid itself.
Food Wars! can be streamed on Hulu, HIDIVE, and Crunchyroll.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Super Sour Lemon Burger
In the latest addition to their favorite fast food joint in Konohagakure, a burger called Lightning Burger was introduced, which left Boruto craving it despite its tangy and salty mix. Interestingly, both Boruto and a girl named Remon seem to appreciate this sour-savory blend, while Konohamaru nearly retches from the intense flavor.
Despite everything, there remains a glimmer of optimism in this unique taste journey since Alvin, known for his culinary abilities in the Babish universe (anime style), can transform this unappetizing burger into something more enjoyable to eat.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations can be streamed on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
Sket Dance: Pelollipop Candy
Pelollipops’ peculiar tastes are similar to Harry Potter’s Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans in their range of unusual flavors. Notable examples include liver, century egg, blue cheese, durian, sea cucumber, margarine, wasabi-coated octopus (tako), seaweed vinegar, corned beef, and bitter gourd.
Despite its peculiar taste often causing a comedic reaction in the show, Himeko appears unfazed and even seems to relish Pelocan, frequently consuming it. In fact, if Hijikata from “Gintama” were here, he might join the ranks of its devoted few fans who enjoy the mayonnaise-flavored Pelollipops.
Sket Dance can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
Spy x Family: Yor’s Cooking
Despite Yor striving hard to play both a supportive spouse role like Loid Forger’s and a caring mother figure for their adopted daughter Anya, her culinary skills leave much to be desired. In truth, many of her dishes have turned out to be inedible, which is quite fitting given her profession as an assassin.
Despite the fact that her kitchen mishaps were often amusingly peculiar, Yor persisted in honing her abilities for the sake of her family. However, it’s worth noting that Yor eventually became a competent cook after successfully replicating her late mother’s southern stew and receiving cooking lessons from her colleague Camilla.
Spy x Family can be streamed on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
Persona 4 the Golden Animation: Nanako’s Mystery Food X Chocolate
In the “Persona” games and animated series, Mystery Food X is a comically unappetizing food often associated with cooking attempts by the female members of the Investigation Team. So when Yu Narukami’s younger cousin Nanako tried to make chocolate for him on Valentine’s Day, involving some of the Investigation Team girls might not have been the best choice.
The mix of proposed ingredients seems equally unappetizing as the Slime-like “chocolate” appearance it forms: coffee iced, bacon strips, bell peppers, wheatgrass juice, vinegar, ponzu sauce, fish sausage, and fermented squid. The end result is so incredibly disgusting that its taste makes Yu faint.
Persona 4 The Golden Animation can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Shion’s Cooking
Despite the fact that Shion is deeply enthusiastic about her hobbies, particularly culinary arts, she initially wasn’t a whiz in the kitchen. Using her large sword as her only cooking tool definitely didn’t improve things. For quite some time, her cooking was infamously terrible, drawing laughs more than compliments. Luckily, Shion eventually acquires the Master Chef skill. However, while her food eventually became palatable and even tasty as intended, it unfortunately remained offensive in every other aspect, such as appearance, odor, and texture.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime can be streamed on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
Made in Abyss: Netherworld Stew
While Nanachi attends to Riko’s wounds following their encounter with a monstrous creature in the treacherous Abyss, Reg is dispatched to gather ingredients for dinner. To prepare, he mashes an entire Demonfish, including its entrails, in a pot, adds a giant Hammerbeak egg, masticates yellow-glowing grass into a sticky paste, and voila: Nanachi’s Subterranean Stew is ready.
Described as having the texture and hue of thick, unappetizing mud, and tasting remarkably like garbage, this dish is a staple for Nanachi due to her lack of culinary skills. It’s likely that both Nanachi and Mitty lived off this dish while living independently. In contrast to Riko, who can make many Abyssal edibles enjoyable, Nanachi’s cooking is beyond redemption.
Steins;Gate: Gel-nana
The PhoneWave, or Time Travel Phone, is the eighth eccentric invention developed by Rintaro Okabe’s Future Gadget Lab. While it forms the foundation for more sophisticated Time Leap Machines, its primary function is to send time-delayed messages, referred to as D-Mails, into the past. However, an unusual side effect of this futuristic device was discovered: when bananas are heated within it, they transform into a gooey, green, gelatinous substance.
Although the bananas appeared altered to the bare eye, under a microscope, it was revealed that their molecular structure had also been disrupted forcefully, tearing apart individual molecules. Put simply, this “goo-banana” isn’t merely unappetizing in appearance but is fundamentally unappealing at a molecular level.
Steins;Gate can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
Delicious in Dungeon: Parasite
In the game “Delicious in Dungeon”, it’s fascinating how once fearsome monsters can turn into appetizing meals. However, consuming parasites, even those that can be made edible and tasty, is strongly advised against, especially since parasites often carry their own parasites. Despite Senshi’s ability to make the parasite palatable, Laios’s grave error was eating a large, undercooked parasite.
1) In a circle of life within the dungeon’s ecosystem, the fishermen pursued the bladefish, but the kraken devoured them. Then, other sea creatures vanquished the kraken and consumed it. Laios, however, consumed the parasite living on the kraken, only for the parasite’s smaller counterparts to attack him later, causing great distress as they burrowed into his digestive tract. Senshi marveled at this intricate cycle of existence, while Laios suffered the repercussions, feeling the tiny invaders wriggling through his inner tissues.
Delicious in Dungeon can be streamed on Netflix.
Made in Abyss: Wazukyan’s Soup
This series, with its dishes that border on depravity, demands a second mention. Even Nanachi’s Netherworld Stew pales in comparison to the sheer disgustingness of this dish. As the Ganja Suicide Corps ventured deep into the Abyss in pursuit of the fabled Golden City, they encountered numerous hardships. The members fell one by one, succumbing to starvation, illness, predators, and the treacherous terrain.
Crafted under the guidance of their leader, Wazukyan, as a desperate measure for survival, it’s hard to justify a meal derived from a young, deformed girl’s offspring. This dish is intended to be concealed deep within the Abyss.
