As a seasoned movie critic, allow me to share my thoughts on the return of Netflix’s captivating series, The Sandman, for its concluding chapter. Brace yourself for more stellar performances from legendary actors embodying mythological beings, some casting decisions leaving us pleasantly surprised, others provoking intrigue.
Adapted from the comic book series, The Sandman chronicles the journey of Dream (Tom Sturridge), as he navigates confrontations with mythical figures spanning across dimensions and eras.
In the second season, volume 1 of “The Sandman,” Dream finds himself grappling with various family ties. For the first time on screen, Esmé Creed-Miles portrays Delirium, the youngest member of the Endless family. Dream feels compelled to aid Delirium in her quest to locate their lost brother, Destruction (Barry Sloane). Meanwhile, Dream confronts the heartbreaking consequences of his son Orpheus’ (Ruairi O’Connor) downfall.
In the first season of The Sandman, we see that the story is deeply connected to Greek mythology, for those unfamiliar with the comics. The character known as Dream, or Morpheus, has a son with Calliope (Melissanthi Mahut), who is a muse. But in the upcoming second season of The Sandman, we see characters and influences from various other folklore and literary sources, including an actor well-known from Game of Thrones.
Game Of Thrones’ Jack Gleeson Plays Puck In The Sandman Season 2
The Most Hated Game Of Thrones Character Was Played By A Very Talented Actor
Jack Gleeson gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the ruthless King Joffrey Baratheon in the hit show “Game of Thrones.” It’s safe to say that audiences eagerly awaited his character’s demise, which occurred in season 4. The character, though essential to the narrative of the series’ early seasons, often made viewers uncomfortable due to his cruel actions.
Despite varying opinions about the character, it’s undeniable that Gleeson delivered an outstanding portrayal as the recklessly uninformed king. The intense dislike for Joffrey is a clear indication of Gleeson’s exceptional acting skills. He remains widely recognized for his role in Game of Thrones, having since taken on lesser-known roles.
Instead, Gleeson brings a vibrant, outstanding portrayal to The Sandman as Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, a notoriously tricky fairy who is most famously depicted in William Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Shakespeare’s characterization of Puck and other fairies was inspired by English folklore, which The Sandman touches upon to some extent.
Puck’s Role In The Sandman Season 2 Explained
Puck Attends A Shakespeare Play With The Faerie Court
Essentially, The Sandman unfolds events in reverse order, implying that A Midsummer Night’s Dream may indeed be an accurate portrayal, as Dream orchestrated the play’s staging to mend his relationship with Auberon (Royce Pierreson) and Titania (Ruta Gedmintas). In Elizabethan England, it is believed that Dream commissioned Shakespeare (Luke Allen-Gale) to pen the play, likely giving him authentic tales of the legends to base his work on.
The royal couple, Auberon and Titania, along with their court, receive an invitation to attend a play. They find amusement in seeing their own characters being satirized, but are also provoked to think about their actions. However, mischievous Puck disobeys Auberon’s instructions and instead of behaving, he interferes with the actor playing Puck, eventually taking over the performance himself.
At the end of the show, Puck’s unveiling of his face serves as the cherry on top of a delightful night. Gleeson skillfully portrays Puck’s cunning knack for stirring up playful mischief, suggesting a hidden depth of danger. There’s an undercurrent of menace in him that echoes Game of Thrones, but we hope that Gleeson will be given more complex roles like this following his work on The Sandman.
