You Won’t Believe Where Netflix’s Untamed Was Really Filmed!

Eric Bana, Sam Neill, and Rosemarie DeWitt are among the cast members featured in “Untamed,” a six-part Netflix thriller series set against the backdrop of Yosemite National Park’s breathtaking yet challenging terrain. The storyline revolves around an investigation into the murder of a young woman within this vast wilderness.

According to Elle Smith, creator of the parks in question, only a small fraction, typically around 3% to 4%, of these parks’ total area is actually visited by people. [Source: Tudum]

You have a general view of the village and its main features, but you haven’t explored the outskirts or truly grasped the extent of the area as a whole.

Mark L. Smith, the co-creator, stated that Yosemite is comparable in size to Rhode Island, yet most people are familiar with just a minuscule fraction of its vastness.

I enjoy removing all shortcuts and advanced equipment, leaving only the basics. It feels like this brings out the true essence of the characters and their inner resources.

But while the show is set in the Californian park, were the cast and crew actually based there?

Read on to find out.

Where was Netflix’s Untamed filmed?

The show was actually filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Locations include:

  • North Shore Studios
  • Chip Kerr Park in Port Moody, which was also used for Shōgun
  • Mount Seymour, which doubles as the mighty El Capitan
  • Grace Lake, which doubles for Grouse Lake

But aerial shots of Yosemite were used to give the impression that the action was unfolding there.

Smith explained to The LA Times, “We were dealing with a challenging environment for filming,” while Bana added, “The idea of returning to a studio setting after such an experience feels creatively draining.

He mentioned that it’s special when a camera emerges from its box as the sun ascends, then retreats again with the sunset, describing it as having a unique energy and rhythm.

Apart from Bana, he expressed his wish that “folks find pleasure in experiencing that environment, and ideally, get inspired to explore similar places themselves,” despite the suspenseful scenes in the movie.
