You’ll Never Guess Which Marvel Story Has Actually Aged the Best

In the 21st century, Marvel Comics has thrived considerably, not just limited to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ’90s were a challenging period for Marvel as a company, but the ’00s revitalized its reputation among fans and produced some exceptional series and storylines. One contentious aspect of Marvel in the ’00s was the event cycle, which saw the release of event books that sold well but left many readers feeling their reading material was hijacked for these events. Over time, this event cycle proved detrimental to Marvel, pushing away casual fans and leaving only die-hard enthusiasts who consumed everything. Event comics often receive mixed reviews; some are adored while others are despised. However, there is one universal aspect of events that most can agree upon — they don’t always hold up over time. They tend to reflect the era in which they were created and require extensive lead-up to fully understand. Yet, there is one controversial Marvel event that I believe has aged exceptionally well: Avengers Vs. X-Men.

The comic book series titled “Avengers vs. X-Men” featured some of the top Marvel writers from the 2010s, such as Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel, and Adam Kubert. This epic showdown pitted the Avengers against the X-Men over control of the Phoenix Force, which was published in 2012 to capitalize on the release of the movie “The Avengers” in theaters. While it may not have the best standing among fans of both teams, I’ve always found “Avengers vs. X-Men” to be a comic that has held up well over time and has aged better than most other Marvel comics.

Avengers Vs. X-Men Is a Rollicking Good Time

Many readers often find that “Avengers Vs. X-Men” isn’t ranked high among Marvel’s top event comics. Similar to many Marvel events, it tends to rely on character misrepresentation and initially favors the Avengers, portraying them as heroes and the X-Men as villains. This perspective is unlikely to be shared by X-Men fans, nor by most Avengers fans.

In essence, the story revolves around the X-Men discovering that the Phoenix Force is returning to Earth. Cyclops devises a plan to harness this power to elevate mutants once more. The Avengers become aware of this development as well, and at odds with Cyclops, Wolverine alerts them about the potential danger. Subsequently, the Avengers assault Utopia, the X-Men’s homebase, leading to global skirmishes between the two teams. A climactic battle on the moon results in Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik, and Namor sharing the Phoenix Force among them. They employ this power to aid the world for a while before relentless Avengers’ attacks push them towards madness. The story takes a dark turn as the “Phoenix Five” turn against each other. Eventually, the X-Men and Avengers unite against Dark Phoenix Cyclops, who ultimately kills Professor X, and they manage to defeat him together.

The storyline “Avengers Vs. X-Men” isn’t complex, but that’s part of its enduring appeal. It offers a nonstop action experience, which is the charm of it. Ever wondered how Iron Man and Magneto would clash? You’ll find out. Curious about who’s more strategic, Captain America or Cyclops? You’ll see. That’s the fun of “Avengers Vs. X-Men“. Unlike other event stories, it doesn’t rely on months of previous books to set up its plot. Instead, it establishes its own premise and immediately launches everyone into combat. It’s like watching a child play with action figures, and sometimes that’s enjoyable to read. “Avengers Vs. X-Men” #9 includes one of Spider-Man’s coolest moments. The spin-off issues delve deeper into the battles, and they’re just as entertaining, thanks to more talented creators contributing to these tales. In essence, “Avengers Vs. X-Men” is all about spectacle, which is why it hasn’t lost its appeal over time. You can pick it up, read it, and get exactly what you expect – simple, uncomplicated fun. Compared to stories like “Secret Invasion“, it works well even without prior knowledge (and it’s still engaging, even then). Stories like “Siege” and “Fear Itself” should never have been published because they require extensive background reading to appreciate. However, “Avengers Vs. X-Men” offers nothing but mindless fun, which is why it remains popular.

Avengers Vs. X-Men Is Marvel at Its Simplest and That’s a Good Thing

The comic series titled Avengers Vs. X-Men didn’t receive any awards. Despite not revolutionizing the comic industry, it paved the way for Marvel NOW publishing initiative, which has many excellent books, provided you aren’t an avid fan of the X-Men, as they were under the leadership of Bendis. Essentially, it was a twelve-issue battle between two renowned comic teams, offering simple, entertaining fun. This is likely why it remains popular over time.

The Avengers vs. X-Men comic series, published by Marvel, has become iconic for many readers due to its thrilling action and unique storyline. Unlike some other superhero battles, this event doesn’t strive to revolutionize the genre; rather, it aims to provide an enjoyable, exciting reading experience. Despite criticism, I find that it stands the test of time well compared to other beloved Marvel stories.
