Young Sherlock creator explains why series isn’t a prequel to Guy Ritchie’s films with Robert Downey Jr

When ‘Young Sherlock’ was announced, a lot of fans assumed it would be a prequel to the Sherlock Holmes movies Guy Ritchie made starting in 2009 – essentially, the same world, but showing Holmes’ earlier years.

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the third film starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and with director Guy Ritchie back working on Sherlock Holmes, it felt like a great opportunity to explore more stories within that universe. It’s been a long wait, but his return really got us hoping for an expanded series!

Despite being an executive producer and director on the new series about the detective’s early years, it’s become apparent that the show doesn’t continue the story from previous installments.

In a recent interview with TopMob and actor Dónal Finn, the creator of the show, Matthew Parkhill, clarified that the series isn’t intended to be a straightforward prequel to the films, and shared details of an early discussion about that possibility.

Parkhill explained that the show was never intended to be a straightforward prequel. He recalled an early discussion with Guy where they both agreed this Sherlock Holmes wouldn’t be a younger version of Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal – it needed to be a distinct character in its own world and universe, respecting the established legacy of the previous depiction.

We loved those films, but we didn’t want to make a story that came before them. We wanted to tell the story of how Sherlock Holmes first began, based on the original Conan Doyle stories. We all agreed it needed to be its own, unique thing.

The series ‘Young Sherlock’ features Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the lead role, with supporting performances from Finn, Natascha McElhone, Zine Tseng, Max Irons, Joseph Fiennes, and Colin Firth.

Originally, Dexter Fletcher was planned to direct a third movie featuring Robert Downey Jr., replacing Guy Ritchie as director.

In 2023, Fletcher stated the film was not being worked on at the moment, explaining that the Covid pandemic had significantly disrupted plans for everyone involved.

It’s proving challenging to revisit and reconnect all the elements of the project, as everyone involved is currently very busy. I haven’t talked to Robert Downey Jr. recently, so I’m not sure if he’s interested in pursuing it again,” Fletcher explained to CinemaBlend.
