Young Sherlock Season 1 Ending Explained: Holmes Family Twist

Be warned, this contains spoilers for Season 1 of Young Sherlock! After the surprising events of the finale, Sherlock Holmes will need to find someone with a lot of experience to help him.

The childhood death of Sherlock’s sister, Beatrice (played by Neve Gordon), has deeply affected both him and his brother Mycroft throughout the series. However, a surprising reveal at the end of season one offers Sherlock a glimmer of hope, while also leaving him with many unanswered questions.

Fiennes Tiffin, speaking with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about the Amazon Prime series Young Sherlock, discussed his surprise at learning Beatrice isn’t dead and shared his thoughts on how his character’s father, Silas, dramatically changes for the worse.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin believes the character Sherlock will need extensive therapy to cope with the traumatic events he’s experienced. He strongly dislikes the villain, Silas, finding him truly awful. While acknowledging the strength of Sherlock’s character, Tiffin praises the storyline for being incredibly well-written and relentlessly difficult for Sherlock, who constantly faces new challenges and devastating revelations. He emphasizes the lasting impact these events will have and how hard it will be for Sherlock to heal.

The dynamic between Sherlock Holmes and his associate, James Moriarty (played by Dónal Finn), is becoming increasingly complex. Dónal Finn described the pair’s ultimately destructive friendship to ScreenRant as “compelling,” hinting at the growing tension seen at the end of the first season.

It’s interesting playing a character people might see as ‘on the dark side,’ but the fun part is realizing they don’t think of themselves that way. It’s not about good versus evil, but simply a different perspective. That allowed me to play the character without judging him. For fans of Sherlock Holmes, it’s like asking ‘what if he was just a loyal friend?’ – someone who would risk everything for another person, similar to the dynamic in Titanic. You know it won’t end well, but they’re willing to go to any lengths for that connection.

Fans of Sherlock Holmes are familiar with the long-standing rivalry between Holmes and Moriarty. However, the way the story Young Sherlock portrays their initial friendship – something not often seen in other adaptations – makes their eventual conflict feel much more impactful and emotionally resonant.

Dónal Finn explained that these characters deeply value intelligence, which forms the basis of their strong bond. They don’t connect with just anyone, but when they do, they open up and become vulnerable with that person. That’s why a falling out feels so intensely personal and hurtful – the betrayal cuts much deeper because of the closeness they once shared.

Despite many people blaming Moriarty, Finn explained to ScreenRant that he always saw the character as more of a different way of looking at a genius, rather than a traditional villain. He said he ‘tried his best’ to portray him that way.

The conclusion of Season 1 sets up the potential introduction of Dr. Watson. Although the show’s creator, Matthew Parkhill, believes adding Watson will make things more complex, stars Finn and Fiennes Tiffin are excited about the possibility of a competitive dynamic between their characters and Watson.

I’ve been thinking a lot about where things could go with the series, and we’ve talked about potentially introducing Watson. It feels like something Matthew [Reeves] would absolutely be open to, and I don’t think it would necessarily mean our current storyline has to finish. It’s interesting because the original Sherlock Holmes stories begin with Sherlock meeting Watson, so I wonder if we’d have to wait until the very end of our story to do that, almost as a natural conclusion. Still, I think Matthew’s clever enough to find a way to bring Watson in without wrapping everything up. It makes me think, though, that maybe we’re reaching a point where we need to drop the ‘Young’ from ‘Young Sherlock’ and just call it ‘Sherlock’ going forward.

Fiennes Tiffin, describing the possibility as ‘interesting,’ suggested that if the show gets a second season, he wouldn’t be surprised if Parkhill found a way to make things happen.

You can now watch all eight episodes of Young Sherlock on Prime Video, featuring Zine Tseng, Natascha McElhone, and Colin Firth.
