YouTubers Dan and Phil Confirm They’re Dating Amid Romance Rumors

Dan and Phil’s life together is the most fun they’ve ever had.

For years, fans wondered if Dan Howell and Phil Lester, who began creating YouTube videos together in 2009, were a couple. They finally confirmed they are dating in a video released on October 13th, titled “Is Phan Real? Dan and Phil Reveal the Truth,” letting their 2.9 million subscribers know the truth.

“Alright, let’s get this over with,” Dan, 34, began. “Are Dan and Phil in a relationship?”

Phil, 38, responded, “Yes.”

Dan playfully said, “Okay, goodbye.” Then, with mock concern, he added, “Oh, my apologies, were you hoping for something else? More juice? Tea? Even… everything I have to offer?”

And Phil noted that the obsession with their relationship status might be “partly our fault.”

We began making YouTube videos together the very day we met, though he jokes that it’s not a good way to start a relationship.

Dan added, “We signed up to be professional entertainers to create content for you to enjoy.”

However, things quickly went downhill in 2009, as Dan explained. He noted that it’s been almost 16 years since then.

Even though they’ve been together for years, the YouTubers – both of whom publicly came out as gay in June 2019 – never officially defined their relationship. Dan explained that they simply started living together and it evolved from there.

Phil playfully pointed out they aren’t officially a couple since they never verbally confirmed their relationship, but he emphasized they share a deep connection and are partners in all aspects of life.

He said it so casually, but it completely wrecked me! Like, he admitted things aren’t *always* flawless, and then… then he basically said we’re not some perfect, fairytale couple. It’s… it’s a little heartbreaking, honestly. But I guess that’s what makes it real, right? Still, I just want everything to be perfect for *them*… for *us* if I’m dreaming. It just means I’ll have to cherish every single moment, even the messy ones. I’ll just keep replaying that moment in my head, trying to understand what he meant…

Dan added, “We have had ups and downs. Like anybody, if you’re a mess, we are a mess.”

He chuckled, saying, “We’re definitely unusual as a couple. We’ve been inseparable for fifteen years—always together, day and night.”

They still debated whether to talk publicly about their personal lives, including questions about their sexuality or any relationships they might be in. Phil even wondered if their audience was entitled to know about these things.

Dan pointed out that sharing personal details impacts how people perceive your work. He explained that for him and Phil – both as a comedic pair and as a gay couple – the way this information is received feels particularly significant.

Even though Dan and Phil have confirmed their relationship, they don’t plan to change the type of videos they make. They still want to focus on making their audience laugh and won’t be turning into a ‘couple vlog’ channel centered around their romance.

Dan admitted they’d been prevented from moving forward for years, held back by past experiences and fear of what might happen.

As Phil explained to everyone, they just wanted the chance to be themselves and pursue their passion – something they felt should have been allowed all along.

Dan also shared that they hope their viewers “meet us with the same energy.”
