Recently, YouTube has been subtly changing things to crack down on ad blockers, almost like it’s using clever strategies to fight against them.
Reports surfaced last year indicating Google was blocking YouTube videos for people using ad blockers. Google stated that using ad blockers goes against YouTube’s terms of service.
I’ve been seeing reports that Google might be deliberately slowing down YouTube videos for people who use ad blockers. Several users are saying they even got a video message asking them to turn off their ad blocker or risk not being able to watch YouTube at all. It’s definitely adding to the frustration people are feeling right now.
Google and YouTube appear to be continuing their efforts to discourage the use of ad blockers. Several users have reported seeing more frequent “This content isn’t available, try again later” messages while using YouTube, according to TechSpot.
What’s even more troubling is the suggestion that these errors aren’t accidental. The report indicates Google might be intentionally causing problems for users who have ad blockers enabled while using YouTube, potentially to discourage them from blocking ads.

Many Google Chrome and Firefox users reported that YouTube videos wouldn’t play unless they either turned off their ad blockers or subscribed to YouTube Premium, which costs $14 per month.

YouTube advised a user experiencing the problem to try clearing their browser’s cache and cookies. They also recommended signing out and then back into their account as a possible fix, according to Windows Report.
The user reported that the problem continued to happen, even after trying the solutions suggested by YouTube.
I stumbled across a couple of interesting fixes people were using when YouTube videos wouldn’t play. Apparently, clicking the ‘Learn More’ link on the error message and then hitting your browser’s back button sometimes got things working again. Some folks also said just repeatedly hitting refresh eventually did the trick – basically, a lot of refreshing until the video finally loaded!
YouTube’s “This content isn’t available, try again later” error appears to be a deliberate change, not just a temporary problem. Ad blockers will need to be updated with improved filters once developers understand how YouTube has changed its requests. It’s become a constant back-and-forth between YouTube and ad blocker developers, and it’s unclear who will ultimately ‘win’ this battle.
