Yuri on Ice Fans Will Love This Hilarious Original Sports Anime (& It Will Return With a Sequel)

Founded in 2011, MAPPA quickly became a leading animation studio thanks to hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. While the studio has faced criticism for overworking and underpaying its animators, fans still eagerly anticipate each new release. Just ten years ago, MAPPA wasn’t nearly as well-known. The 2016 original series Yuri on Ice proved to be their big break, and they’ve continued to gain popularity with acclaimed shows like Banana Fish and many others.

The highly anticipated Yuri on Ice film, which would have explored Victor Nikiforov’s youth, has been officially canceled after nearly eight years of waiting, disappointing many fans. Yuri on Ice was unique for its blend of figure skating and the romantic relationship between Victor and Yuri Katsuki, making it hard to find anything quite like it. While nothing can truly replace it, SK8 the Infinity is a good alternative. Both shows share a similar captivating quality and charm that draw viewers in immediately.

What Is the Plot of SK8 the Infinity?

Released in 2021 by Studio Bones, SK8 the Infinity is a sports anime that’s getting a second season, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. While Yuri on Ice features figure skating, this anime is all about skateboarding. The story centers on Reki Kyan, a gifted high school skateboarder and board-maker. By day, he works at a skate shop, and by night, he competes in a dangerous, underground skateboarding race called “S” against skaters from across the city.

Skateboarders are forbidden from acknowledging their connection through S outside of designated areas. The story starts with Reki suffering a defeat and injuring his arm in a race against a skater called Shadow, preventing him from practicing. While reflecting on his loss, he encounters Langa Hasegawa, a new student who recently moved to Japan after the death of his father.

Langa, a complete beginner to skateboarding, starts a part-time job at a skate shop with Reki, and they go on a delivery trip together. Unexpectedly, Langa finds himself competing in a skate race against a skilled skater named Shadow. Though new to skateboarding, Langa has years of snowboarding experience thanks to his father, and his natural talent surprises everyone in the skateboarding community. His performance also attracts the attention of a powerful, unknown figure.

Yuri on Ice and SK8 the Infinity Share Quite a Few Similarities

Though quite different in many ways, these two anime share a similar emotional core. Both stories center around a main character who battles self-doubt and struggles to continue chasing their dreams, particularly when facing intense pressure and competition. For example, Reki loves skateboarding, but constantly questions himself after losing to more skilled opponents.

Similar to how Victor helped Yuri rediscover his love for skating and fully commit to his passion, Langa provides strong support for Reki, recognizing his potential and constantly motivating him. Both SK8 the Infinity and Yuri on Ice feature thrilling competitions where characters pour their hearts into performing. While SK8 the Infinity hints at romance, it’s more subtle than in Yuri on Ice, meaning romantic pairings are mostly explored by fans. You can currently watch SK8 the Infinity on Crunchyroll, so be sure to add it to your watchlist!
