Zac Efron’s $77M R-Rated Comedy Movie Cracks Netflix’s Global Charts 10 Years Later

Ten years after it first came out, the adult comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is now popular again, appearing on Netflix’s top 10 lists in many countries.

Zac Efron leads the cast. He first became famous playing Troy Bolton in the High School Musical films from 2006 to 2008, and has since appeared in popular comedies like 17 Again, Neighbors, That Awkward Moment, Dirty Grandpa, and Baywatch.

The movie Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was the 7th most popular film on Netflix worldwide from February 2nd to 8th, racking up 3.2 million views and 5.3 million hours of watch time. It outperformed films like Night at the Museum, Copshop, and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

The film ranked lower than Overboard (2018), Sweet Home Alabama, In the Land of Saints and Sinners, KPop Demon Hunters, The Rip, and The Investigation of Lucy Letby, which all topped the charts. Currently, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is a Top 10 movie only in the United States.

Directed by Jake Szymanski and written by Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates features Zac Efron and Adam DeVine as two wild brothers. They place an online ad searching for dates to take to a family wedding, but end up with a pair of women (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza) who are even more chaotic than they are.

The film features a talented cast including Stephen Root, Stephanie Faracy, Sugar Lyn Beard, Sam Richardson, Alice Wetterlund, Mary Holland, Kumail Nanjiani, Jake Johnson, Marc Maron, Wendy Williams, Branscombe Richmond, Chloe Bridges, Lavell Crawford, and Erik Griffin.

This movie is based on a real-life event: two brothers put an ad on Craigslist looking for dates to bring to their cousin’s wedding. The ad became a huge online sensation in February 2013, and the brothers eventually wrote a book about the experience called Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates: And a Thousand Cocktails.

The movie got a mixed reaction from critics and audiences. It currently has a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising its quirky idea and the actors’ dedication, though the humor sometimes felt disconnected from those strengths. Audience scores reflect this division, landing at 51%.

According to Ben Kendrick in a ScreenRant review, the movie Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates delivers on the typical expectations for an R-rated comedy, but doesn’t quite succeed in being both humorous and thought-provoking.

The 2016 comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates earned over $77 million worldwide, making it a profitable film despite mixed reviews. Now, ten years later, it’s gaining popularity again, appearing on Netflix’s global top charts.
