Zachary Levi’s movie, a blend of fantasy and comedy, is now coming to Hulu. This follows a disappointing theatrical run and a Razzie nomination, indicating it wasn’t well-received by audiences or critics.
Fans will be able to stream Harold and the Purple Crayon starting April 30th. The movie, which first hit theaters on July 21, 2024, stars Levi as Harold, a man whose purple crayon brings his drawings to life. It’s a unique blend of live-action and animation, following Harold as he steps into the real world and teams up with friends to overcome unexpected obstacles and save the day.
Critics Hated Harold & The Purple Crayon – But Audiences Love It
Despite being designed for children, the movie Harold and the Purple Crayon wasn’t well-received by film critics. It currently has a low 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers finding it lacked the creativity it seemed to celebrate, calling it a film that ‘plays it safe’ instead of truly exploring imagination.
The film received mixed reviews, and that negatively impacted its financial performance. It failed to make a profit, earning just $32.2 million globally despite costing $40 million to produce. Additionally, Levi was nominated for an award for his role in Harold and the Purple Crayon, but Jerry Seinfeld from Unfrosted ultimately won.
Although Harold and the Purple Crayon didn’t make a lot of money at the box office, viewers who saw it generally liked it. It has an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from over 500 verified viewers, indicating it’s a well-received film.
People who watched the movie online really enjoyed it, saying it was great for families. Some even thought it was better than the original book it was based on – a popular children’s story from 1955 written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson.
Harold & The Purple Crayon Faced Stiff Competition from 2 Billion-Dollar Movies
Despite being a charming film, Harold and the Purple Crayon didn’t do well in theaters. It received mixed reviews, and its release date unfortunately clashed with several major blockbusters, including Deadpool & Wolverine. Competition from earlier summer hits like Despicable Me 4, which were still playing in many cinemas, also contributed to its disappointing box office results.
Sadly, Harold and the Purple Crayon didn’t perform well against the competition. Deadpool & Wolverine led the box office, and Inside Out 2 earned an impressive $1.699 billion worldwide. Despicable Me 4 also significantly outperformed Harold, grossing $972 million globally, just under $1 billion. With the film’s disappointing theatrical run likely at an end, audiences will soon be able to watch it at home.
Harold and the Purple Crayon arrives on Hulu on April 30.
