Good news for fans of both Zack Snyder and James Gunn! Their 2004 film, Dawn of the Dead, is coming to Netflix soon.
A remake of the original film is coming to Netflix on January 1, 2026. This film was director Zack Snyder’s first feature-length project, written by James Gunn. The cast includes Sarah Polley (known for Splice), Ving Rhames (Lilo & Stitch), Jake Weber (Medium), and Meki Phifer (ER, House of Lies). The story follows a small group of people struggling to survive a zombie outbreak while trapped inside a shopping mall in Milwaukee.
The film not only featured a new cast, but also honored the original horror movie by bringing back some of its stars. Scott Reiniger, Tom Savini, and Ken Foree – all from the original film – made brief appearances in the remake directed by Snyder and Gunn.
This film is essentially a fresh take on the classic Dawn of the Dead, designed to scare today’s viewers. It did very well at the box office, earning over $100 million globally despite only costing $26 million to make.
The film was well-received by both critics and viewers, and remains highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes more than two decades after its release. It currently boasts a 77% approval rating from both critics and general audiences, based on over 250,000 user reviews. Critics generally agree that it’s a fast-paced, intense, and successful remake of the original Dawn of the Dead, honoring the classic while still forging its own identity.
After the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead proved popular, a new film with a similar feel arrived in 2021, again directed by Snyder. He also wrote the script and produced the movie, which stars Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell. The story follows a team of mercenaries attempting a risky robbery in Las Vegas while a zombie outbreak is happening.
Romero’s Original Zombie Horror Franchise Lands Resident Evil Star for Upcoming Installment
Zack Snyder’s reimagining of Dawn of the Dead might have initially been intended as a single film to bring zombie horror back to modern audiences, but the Dawn of the Dead franchise still has plenty of potential. Starting with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, the series has grown to include six movies, the last of which, Survival of the Dead, was released in 2009.
George A. Romero’s planned final installment in the Living Dead series, currently called Twilight of the Dead, is in the works, though a release date hasn’t been announced. The film is expected to further develop the zombies we know and fear. Betty Gabriel, known for her role in Get Out, and actor from Resident Evil have joined the cast, along with several of Romero’s longtime collaborators who are working on special effects and other aspects of the production.
Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead hits Netflix on Jan. 1, 2026.
