Fans eagerly anticipating further installments of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon series might find their excitement tempered by the director’s recent statements. In a conversation with Variety, Snyder hinted at potential future Rebel Moon films, expressing his current focus on a “LAPD SWAT movie” for Netflix. With this project in development, he’s temporarily setting aside Rebel Moon. Although Snyder sees vast possibilities for tales set within that sci-fi world, he remains undecided about any future projects until he can assess the current situation.
Snyder explained that he had shifted his focus from ‘Rebel Moon’, momentarily, as he referred to it, due to Netflix’s LAPD SWAT movie project. He said, ‘So I decided to take a break from it for a while.’ Working on both movies simultaneously was demanding and exhausting, but it was refreshing to have a brief respite. He added that he’ll return to ‘Rebel Moon’ after finishing this project, and there are countless stories waiting to be explored. So, we’ll see where we stand once he’s back.
Following several years within the DC Extended Universe, Zack Snyder ventured into the original setting of ‘Rebel Moon’ for a while. The initial movie, titled ‘Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire‘, hit Netflix screens in 2023. Subsequently, ‘Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver‘ arrived a year later. Both parts also featured R-rated director’s editions that premiered in August 2024. Unfortunately, the original versions of both films were met with widespread criticism, whereas their R-rated counterparts received somewhat better reviews, albeit not universally acclaimed. To date, ‘Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness‘ holds the franchise‘s highest Rotten Tomatoes score at 67%.
Despite the ongoing expansion of the Rebel Moon universe through the video game Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game and a prequel comic featuring Nemesis, the likelihood of additional films is uncertain. Although multiple sequels have been planned, Kurt Johnstad, co-writer with Snyder, stated that it would require “good fortune” and an extraordinary event to produce another movie. The release of The Scargiver, which saw fewer viewers than its predecessor, has raised questions about the franchise’s continued development.
Even though the two “Rebel Moon” films received favorable reviews, director Zack Snyder may choose to step away from the franchise before considering a third film. Given the grand scale of these sci-fi productions, a change in pace with an LAPD thriller could be refreshing for the director. This would allow him to create a more straightforward action movie before contemplating future developments in the “Rebel Moon” universe. However, Snyder has not assumed that there will definitely be a “Rebel Moon 3”. His use of “if at all” suggests that the series’ continuation is not guaranteed. As discussions about this potential sequel progress, it may become clear whether or not it would be financially viable.
The films of “Rebel Moon” had limited showings in cinemas before streaming on Netflix, making them unconventional productions not primarily focused on huge box office earnings. Despite negative critical reviews and low viewership, a third film may not be greenlit by Netflix unless there’s significant fan demand for more story. Zack Snyder has previously gained support from online campaigns, such as the one to release “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.” However, that project was based on iconic DC Comics characters, and fans were eager to see Snyder’s vision come to life. The enthusiasm for “Rebel Moon” seems less apparent, so it will be intriguing to follow the series’ development from now on.
