Zayn Malik Doesn’t Think He Was “Ever in Love” With Ex Gigi Hadid

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid used to be very affectionate, but their relationship didn’t last beyond intimate moments.

It’s been almost five years since the singer, formerly of One Direction, and his ex-girlfriend broke up. He recently explained that despite dating on and off for five years, he doesn’t think their relationship ever went beyond a strong initial attraction.

Okay, so I was listening to Zayn on the Call Her Daddy podcast, and honestly, my heart just melted! He was so sweet talking about Gigi. He made it super clear he’ll always love her – and can you blame him? She gave him Khai, his beautiful daughter, and he has so much respect for her. It’s just… he said he loved her, but wasn’t sure if it was in love love, you know? As a fan, it’s just… complicated, but mostly I’m just happy he acknowledges how important she is to him and to Khai’s life!

Zayn isn’t sure if he was ever truly in love with the supermodel he started dating in 2016, but he does say he cared for her deeply. He clarified, though, that he didn’t think he was in love with her at the time.

As he reasoned, “Otherwise I would have been a better version of myself.”

Zayn, now 33, recently admitted he once felt a stronger connection with Gigi—who has been dating Bradley Cooper since 2023—than he realizes now.

Zayn shared that his idea of love has changed over time. He admitted that what he once believed was love might have actually been something else, like strong attraction. Looking back, he doesn’t think it was true love.

Zayn, who was previously in a highly publicized relationship with Perrie Edwards of Little Mix from 2012 to 2015, has since experienced single life. He shared that he actually doesn’t mind being alone, saying, “I don’t find being alone scary.”

Zayn said he doesn’t mean any disrespect to his past partners, but being single has been incredibly liberating for him. He’s someone who likes to do things his own way and be independent, and he’s really enjoying the freedom to make his own plans and live life on his own schedule, like sleeping in whenever he wants.

And the “Die For Me” singer emphasized he’s had a lot to learn during this time on his own, too. 

I used to have problems in relationships because I was young and made mistakes, like talking to other women when I was already with someone. I’ve learned from those experiences, and now I don’t have to feel guilty about them anymore.
