What exactly happened in The Drama?
If you’ve watched the new dark comedy starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, you’ll know the story takes a surprising turn very quickly. Just before her wedding, Emma (Zendaya) shares a significant secret with her fiancé Charlie (Robert) and their friends, Mike (Mamoudou Athie) and Rachel (Alana Haim).
Following a discussion about their DJ’s heroin use, Rachel proposes everyone share their most regrettable act – something she and Mike confessed to doing shortly before their wedding.
Emma confesses that she once planned a school shooting at age fifteen, but ultimately didn’t go through with it. This shocking admission throws the whole evening into chaos and could ruin her relationship with Charlie, who is completely shocked and struggling to process what she’s told him.
Despite the difficult news, the wedding is still planned. The movie shows Charlie dealing with his emotions in the days leading up to the event, while Emma fears he might cancel everything because of what she told him.
Charlie later talks to his colleague, Misha (Hailey Gates), and asks her advice about a tricky situation. When Misha says she’d contact the police, Charlie gets flustered, and surprisingly, they end up kissing.
Honestly, even after watching Emma and Charlie seemingly make it through all the wedding day drama and end up together, I’m still not entirely sure what the movie means. It’s fascinating because even the people who created it admit it’s open to interpretation – there isn’t one single, definitive answer, and I love that!
According to writer-director Kristoffer Borgli, speaking before a screening on April 2nd, any reaction a viewer has to the film is perfectly acceptable. He explained that whether someone laughs, cries, or feels something else entirely, it’s all valid – you’re likely right about what feels true for you, and you get to decide how you interpret it, as reported by Gold Derby.

He joked, “You can leave the theater if you want to.”
I’ve been following this movie closely, and both Zendaya and Robert have been really clear – they want everyone to know this isn’t a typical romantic comedy. They’ve stressed that it’s something completely different, and they don’t want people going in expecting a fluffy rom-com experience.
Zendaya described romance as a very emotionally open experience, telling Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that it’s ‘all gas until the end’ – meaning it feels exciting and intense right up until it’s over.
Zendaya hopes the film, even with its serious subject matter, will encourage meaningful conversations.
And Shake It Up alum is also hoping the plot twist remains a surprise for moviegoers.

Zendaya recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and talked about how the movie leaves a strong impression on viewers. She explained that the film’s surprising twist leads to a lot of discussion afterward, and she hopes people avoid spoilers so others can enjoy the full emotional impact of the story without knowing what’s coming.
Robert offered his advice on what you should understand about a partner before making a long-term commitment, referencing the situation with Charlie and Emma.
He explained on the April episode of the New York Times’ Modern Love podcast that accepting unpredictability can lead to a more fulfilling relationship. He believes demanding complete transparency about someone’s past can actually be damaging, as their history isn’t relevant to the present relationship.
