Zootopia 2 Passes Major Box Office Milestone In Record Time

As a huge movie fan, I’ve been following the box office numbers for 2025, and while Disney hadn’t been dominating like they used to, things weren’t terrible for them. The live-action Lilo & Stitch remake was a massive hit – it broke records over Memorial Day and ended up making over a billion dollars worldwide! For a while, it was the only Hollywood movie that year to reach that milestone (though the animated Chinese film Ne Zha 2 was doing incredibly well with over $2 billion!). Everyone figured other American films would join the billion-dollar club before the year was out, and now Disney can officially say they distributed two of them! It’s great to see Lilo & Stitch do so well and give Disney a big win.

As reported by Variety, Zootopia 2 has surpassed $1 billion in earnings. Remarkably, it reached this milestone in only 17 days, making it the fastest PG-rated movie to do so. Its success outside of the US was crucial, with international earnings totaling $753.4 million – boosted by record numbers in China. Zootopia 2 is now the 13th animated film ever to reach $1 billion globally, continuing the success of the first Zootopia movie.

How Zootopia 2 Reached $1 Billion at the Worldwide Box Office

While billion-dollar movies aren’t as frequent now – nine were released in 2019 alone – a Zootopia sequel always seemed likely to achieve that level of success. The first film was incredibly popular and profitable for Disney, and both movies benefited from positive word-of-mouth. Following the original Zootopia‘s success as a critically acclaimed animated hit, the sequel delivered another fun and insightful story that cleverly combined humor with social themes. The Zootopia films would likely have been box office hits regardless of the praise they received, but their critical acclaim certainly helped.

I’ve been following the box office numbers, and it’s clear Zootopia 2 is doing incredibly well! It really helped that there weren’t many other big family movies out around the same time – it quickly became the go-to choice for families. Wicked: For Good did start strong, earning $445.6 million worldwide, but it hasn’t quite reached the same level of success as the first Wicked film. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was a surprising hit last week, but I don’t think it will stay on top for long. As of December 9th, Zootopia 2 is back at number one domestically, and it seems like it’s here to stay for a while!

Disney is likely ending 2025 on a positive note with the upcoming release of Avatar: Fire and Ash during the holiday season. While the studio still faces challenges with franchises like Marvel and Pixar, the new Avatar film is expected to perform very well – potentially surpassing the box office numbers of Zootopia 2. Director James Cameron is cautiously optimistic, considering the first two Avatar movies each earned over $2 billion worldwide. Disney could end up distributing the only three films this year to reach the $1 billion mark in revenue.

It’s no surprise Disney wants to continue the Zootopia series. While a third movie hasn’t been officially confirmed, the ending of Zootopia 2 strongly suggests another film is in the works. Fans are hoping it won’t take nearly a decade for Zootopia 3 to arrive, especially since many of Disney’s recent movies haven’t performed well in theaters. It would be a good move to capitalize on Zootopia’s success, as long as they don’t rush the story.
