Last weekend, Wicked: For Good had a hugely successful opening, breaking box office records. Soon, Disney’s new film is expected to easily surpass the $226 million debut of Jon M. Chu’s musical, kicking off a month of strong performance in theaters. Even before its official release, a special preview event has become incredibly popular, showing just how much anticipation there is for this sequel.
It’s been a while since the huge success of Zootopia in 2016 – almost nine years! The film was critically acclaimed, earning a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 92% audience score), and led to a Disney+ series, Zootopia+, in 2022, along with numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Now, the upcoming sequel is predicted to be Disney’s biggest film of the year, potentially surpassing the $1.04 million earned by Lilo & Stitch.
Zootopia 2 is predicted to earn around $150 million in the US and $270 million globally, and the Thanksgiving holiday could boost those numbers even higher. There’s also talk that the movie will open very strongly in China, potentially bringing its total debut to over $500 million. If that happens, Zootopia 2 could become one of the year’s top 10 highest-grossing films in just one weekend, surpassing Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
‘Zootopia 2’ Is Starting with Strong Reviews

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Though Zootopia set a high standard, critics are enjoying the sequel. Based on the first 64 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s earned a 94% rating – a strong score that beats many films released this year and is very close to the original movie’s success.
Early reviews for Zootopia 2 are mixed, with only four being negative. These criticisms center on a story that feels emotionally empty and overly complex. However, most reviewers recommend the film, noting it features plenty of clever puns, beautiful animation, and pop culture references that help to mask its flaws. While Discussing Film found the movie a little repetitive, JoBlo described it as an average, though watchable, sequel.
Okay, setting aside a few minor complaints, pretty much everyone is raving about this movie – a lot of people are calling it the best Disney film in ages! Collider said it’s a really strong sequel, and the Globe and Mail nailed what the movie is really about, which is…
The film delivers its message subtly, and while it doesn’t preach, it might leave you feeling more optimistic than before.
With everything happening in the world right now, a new Zootopia movie might be exactly what we need.
