I was so thrilled when Disney brought back the world of Zootopia! It feels like ages ago that they first wowed us with it – and films like it – back in 2016, achieving massive success with multiple blockbusters. Now, nearly ten years later, they’ve returned with a sequel that’s already breaking records, and I couldn’t be happier!
Director Byron Howard hinted at possibilities for Zootopia 3, mentioning a post-credits scene that suggests potential storylines.
He was careful not to make any promises, saying they were simply appreciating the present. He acknowledged that Judy and Nick are usually the focus of any narrative and that fans are speculating about their future. While he didn’t know if they could fulfill all those expectations, he was happy to see so much enthusiasm from the audience.
Producer Yvett Merino explained the success of a potential Zootopia 2, highlighting how the original 2016 Zootopia film created a vibrant and relatable world that laid a strong foundation for any follow-up.
Merino said people really enjoyed getting to revisit the characters from the first movie, like Judy and Nick. They’re also thrilled to introduce some new faces, including Gary the Snake and Nibbles Maple Stick, who he considers a standout character.
She added that seeing audiences at the theater enjoying the film was something they’d always hoped for. They really wanted people to experience it together in a cinema, and it feels incredible that it’s actually happening – like a dream come true.
Zootopia 2 Stole Frozen’s Crown
So far, Zootopia 2 has earned $1.59 billion, making it the top-grossing film from Hollywood in 2025. The movie also set new records and surpassed the previous earnings of $1.45 billion for the highest-grossing film from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The highly anticipated Zootopia 2 is receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. Critics give it a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences love it even more, giving it a 96% score. The film is also designated as “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” on the site.
The first movie earned a very strong $1.01 billion globally, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2016. While the second film earned more, the first installment was still a huge success. Critics loved it, giving it a 98% approval rating and a “Certified Fresh” designation, and audiences generally agreed, giving it a 92% rating. It was also recognized with an Academy Award for Best Animated Film.
Zootopia 2 is playing in theaters.
