Zootopia 3 Is Already Inevitable for 2 Big Reasons

This post contains spoilers for Zootopia 2

The original Zootopia was a huge hit for Disney, earning over $1 billion worldwide and winning an Academy Award. With its imaginative world and charming main characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, a sequel seemed inevitable. However, Disney took almost ten years to develop Zootopia 2, and it appears this new installment will be even more ambitious than the first, suggesting many more adventures are in store for the beloved characters.

While Disney hasn’t officially announced Zootopia 3, the success of Zootopia 2 strongly suggests another film is likely. The potential for huge profits would certainly encourage Disney to move forward, and it seems the filmmakers were actually considering a third Zootopia movie even before the second one was released.

Zootopia 2‘s Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Zootopia 3

Disney wasn’t initially sure if the first Zootopia movie would be popular, so they made it a complete story with a clear ending – meaning it worked well even if there weren’t any sequels. However, after the first film’s success, the creators of Zootopia 2 felt confident about the future and included hints about a potential Zootopia 3. While the main mystery involving the Lynxley family and Gary De’Snake is fully solved in the second movie, a short scene after the credits suggests where the story could go next.

Like many Disney and Marvel films, Zootopia 2 features a scene after the credits roll. It starts with a funny moment between Judy and some familiar faces from the first movie. However, this scene quickly hints at something bigger. A bird feather drifts down and lands on Judy’s windowsill, suggesting that birds will be introduced in a potential Zootopia 3. The first two Zootopia movies have focused entirely on mammals (with reptiles added in the second film), so bringing in birds feels like a logical next step for the story and world.

As a huge fan of Zootopia, I was really hoping the little post-credits scene in the second movie would give us some clues about where Zootopia 3 is headed, but it mostly just featured birds! Knowing this franchise, I’m expecting another story that really makes you think about prejudice and acceptance, which I loved in the first two films. But the filmmakers absolutely need to come up with something new. They can’t just swap out reptiles for birds and call it a day – that would feel really repetitive and disappointing. Still, the fact that they included that little tease at the end of Zootopia 2 makes me optimistic. It suggests they have a strong vision for the next installment, and honestly, they’ve earned my trust so far.

Zootopia 2‘s Box Office Performance Makes Another Sequel Inevitable

I really had a feeling Zootopia 2 was going to be huge, and it looks like I was right! Everyone was predicting it would be one of the year’s biggest movies, maybe even making over a billion dollars, and the early numbers are confirming that. It’s going to absolutely crush it here in the US – they’re estimating over $125 million just for the Thanksgiving weekend! But even more exciting, it’s a massive hit internationally too. The pre-sales in China were record-breaking, which is fantastic news and could mean a big, reliable income stream for Hollywood again.

While the final box office numbers for Zootopia 2 are still coming in, its strong performance practically guarantees Disney will continue making films in the Zootopia series for years to come. This is especially true after a challenging year for Disney at the box office. Several Pixar movies haven’t performed as well as expected, Marvel’s popularity has dipped, and some films were outright failures. Zootopia is one of Disney’s most reliable successes, so even without a hint of a sequel in the credits, the high ticket sales clearly show the studio will keep the franchise going.

It will be interesting to see when development begins on Zootopia 3. Usually, studios quickly follow up successful films, but Zootopia proved it can still be a huge hit even after a long wait. This means Disney doesn’t need to rush Zootopia 3; the filmmakers can take the time they need to develop a compelling story, which will likely improve the quality of the movie. Currently, Disney Animation has Hexed planned for November 2026 and Frozen 3 for November 2027, so Zootopia 3 probably won’t be released until 2028 at the earliest – and likely a few years after that.
