Zorin OS is a Linux operating system created as a user-friendly alternative to Windows and macOS. Recently, it’s become very popular with people switching from Windows, probably because Windows 10 is no longer supported and many are looking for an operating system that doesn’t heavily focus on artificial intelligence like Microsoft is with Windows.
Linux is known for working with a very wide range of computers and devices. Unlike Windows 11, it doesn’t have strict hardware requirements like TPM 2.0, meaning older but still functional computers can continue to be used. This makes Linux a great option for people who want to avoid replacing working hardware simply to stay secure and receive updates.
Zorin OS 18 is capitalizing on Windows 10’s forced retirement
With Microsoft ending support for Windows 10, it’s not surprising that Zorin OS 18 is proving popular. Released on the same day Windows 10 reached its end of life, the Linux operating system has already been downloaded over 2 million times in less than three months. The developers say this is the largest release in the project’s history, with about 75% of new users switching from Windows 10 or 11.
Zorin OS is frequently praised as the most Windows-like Linux distribution, and this likely explains its growing popularity among new users.
Although it doesn’t mean everyone is abandoning Windows, more people are exploring other options. This is largely because many users are annoyed by unwanted AI features and the increasing amount of unnecessary software that comes with Microsoft’s operating system.
Zorin OS isn’t the only Linux operating system becoming more popular. Steam’s data shows Linux usage is up, recently increasing by 0.38% to reach 3.58% of all Steam installs. While Windows is still the clear leader at 94.23%, Linux is steadily gaining ground.
