It’s been a year since Sony wrapped up its Spider-Man Universe (SSU) with a film that unfortunately didn’t resonate with audiences. The SSU began as a plan for spin-off movies after The Amazing Spider-Man films, but shifted direction when Tom Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite releasing Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven the Hunter, the franchise struggled with poor reviews and disappointing ticket sales, ultimately leading to its conclusion. However, the future still looks promising for Spider-Man overall.
Released on December 13, 2024, Kraven the Hunter was the sixth and last movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Unfortunately, the film amplified the existing issues with the franchise and became its lowest-grossing project, earning just $62 million and a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The SSU films had been performing progressively worse, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the series in theaters. However, this doesn’t mean Spider-Man is gone – both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures still have plans for the character.
Why the SSU Was Cancelled & What the Future Holds For Spider-Man

The Venom movies, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote, were the biggest success in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. However, even those films didn’t meet Sony’s expectations, and movies like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were significant disappointments. Following the conclusion of the Venom series with The Last Dance in October 2024, Sony decided to move away from the SSU and concentrate on developing Spider-Man’s story within the MCU, as well as other projects.
A major issue with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was that Spider-Man himself wasn’t included. While the series featured many famous characters and villains connected to Spider-Man, not having him actually in the stories likely contributed to the franchise’s struggles. Luckily, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has thrived within the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, starting with his appearance in Captain America: Civil War back in 2016. We can look forward to even more adventures with Spider-Man: Brand New Day in 2026.
In addition to Spider-Man’s ongoing story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures is planning several Spider-Man projects of their own. Nicolas Cage will reprise his role as Spider-Man Noir – a live-action version of the character he voiced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – in a new series. Plus, the popular Spider-Verse franchise will continue with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, bringing back Miles Morales for the third and final film in the trilogy. This means fans can still look forward to plenty of Spider-Man adventures, even outside of the shared Sony Spider-Man Universe.
