I’m a huge fan of Death Note, and what really got me was Light’s journey. He’s technically the ‘hero’ of the story, but let’s be real, he’s a total megalomaniac! He starts out wanting to be a god and for a long time, it looked like he’d actually pull it off – he was always several steps ahead. But then Mello, Near, and the rest of the Kira task force finally managed to do what L couldn’t, and it was incredible watching Light get completely trapped. His ending really felt fitting for the villain he became.

Just before Touta Matsuda shoots him, Light completely falls apart mentally. The once-confident killer has been defeated by the people who inherited his greatest rival’s legacy, a crushing blow to his pride. In the end, Light’s own ambitions are destroyed by someone he trusted most: Ryuk, the shinigami, writes his name in the Death Note, finally ending his plans.

Akira Is Undone by Forces Beyond His Understanding in Devilman Crybaby

From the very beginning of Devilman Crybaby, Akira Fudo was headed for tragedy, though he didn’t realize it at the time. Similar to Tanjiro in Demon Slayer, Akira starts with a mission to eliminate demons and save humanity. Ironically, humanity ultimately destroyed itself. Despite Akira’s efforts to kill numerous demons, the widespread fear and suspicion caused by their appearance led people to fight amongst themselves, resulting in the downfall of the entire human race.

In the end, Akira is killed by his close friend, Ryo, who is secretly the fallen angel Lucifer. Although Ryo loved Akira and didn’t intend to kill him, God arranged for Akira’s death as a punishment for Lucifer’s rebellion. The story suggests that Akira, and everyone else, is constantly brought back to life only to be destroyed repeatedly, forever.
