Most stories have happy endings where the good guy wins, but not all heroes are successful. Sometimes, despite doing everything they can, heroes are defeated by stronger villains or simply bad luck. These are truly tragic heroes, failing in their goals like Hamlet – except their failures are far more dramatic and final.
These anime heroes often win, but their victories come at a terrible personal cost. They’re left deeply damaged by their experiences, almost as if they’ve lost. Constantly sacrificing themselves to save others ultimately destroys them. It’s a harsh reality that being a hero doesn’t promise happiness or even survival.
Shinji Ikari’s Mind Cracks Under Apocalyptic Pressure in Neon Genesis Evangelion
Unlike the typical optimistic heroes found in many anime, Shinji Ikari starts Neon Genesis Evangelion as a reluctant and unwilling character. Forced by his father to pilot a weapon against alien invaders, Shinji’s fights with these creatures, called Angels, gradually break down his mental state. By the end of Evangelion, he’s a hollow version of his former self, despite already being emotionally fragile at the beginning.
At the end of the series, Shinji is left in a broken world, mirroring his shattered emotional state. He and Asuka are the only two people seemingly remaining after rejecting the chance to merge into a single consciousness. However, they offer each other little comfort, and their final interaction is marked by Asuka’s harsh words: “how disgusting.”
Eren Jaegar Becomes the Villain He Thinks the World Needs in Attack on Titan
Eren started as a hopeful child determined to make a difference, but the realities of the world around him changed him for the worse. Initially, he wanted to eliminate the Titans, but after learning the complicated history of his world, he began using them for his own purposes, ultimately becoming corrupted.
Eren tried to protect his home, Paradis Island, by eliminating all other nations, unleashing a devastating Titan army to destroy the world. However, he was ultimately stopped by his closest friends, with Mikasa, the person who loved him the most, delivering the final, fatal strike. Their heartbreaking and complicated relationship deeply affected not only Eren and Mikasa, but also all those who fought alongside them.
Light Yagami Died a Cathartic Death at the End of Death Note
I’m a huge fan of Death Note, and what really got me was Light’s journey. He’s technically the ‘hero’ of the story, but let’s be real, he’s a total megalomaniac! He starts out wanting to be a god and for a long time, it looked like he’d actually pull it off – he was always several steps ahead. But then Mello, Near, and the rest of the Kira task force finally managed to do what L couldn’t, and it was incredible watching Light get completely trapped. His ending really felt fitting for the villain he became.
Just before Touta Matsuda shoots him, Light completely falls apart mentally. The once-confident killer has been defeated by the people who inherited his greatest rival’s legacy, a crushing blow to his pride. In the end, Light’s own ambitions are destroyed by someone he trusted most: Ryuk, the shinigami, writes his name in the Death Note, finally ending his plans.
Akira Is Undone by Forces Beyond His Understanding in Devilman Crybaby
From the very beginning of Devilman Crybaby, Akira Fudo was headed for tragedy, though he didn’t realize it at the time. Similar to Tanjiro in Demon Slayer, Akira starts with a mission to eliminate demons and save humanity. Ironically, humanity ultimately destroyed itself. Despite Akira’s efforts to kill numerous demons, the widespread fear and suspicion caused by their appearance led people to fight amongst themselves, resulting in the downfall of the entire human race.
In the end, Akira is killed by his close friend, Ryo, who is secretly the fallen angel Lucifer. Although Ryo loved Akira and didn’t intend to kill him, God arranged for Akira’s death as a punishment for Lucifer’s rebellion. The story suggests that Akira, and everyone else, is constantly brought back to life only to be destroyed repeatedly, forever.
David Falls Victim to His Own Ambition in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
David Martinez, like many people in Night City, starts the series poor and with little control over his life – a consequence of the harsh, money-driven world he lives in. He’s drawn to the life of an edgerunner, believing it will offer him a chance at a better future. And for a while, it does – but ultimately, his journey reaches a tragic end.
David and his crew faced overwhelming challenges from all sides and were eventually defeated by the very system they tried to change. Before his final moments, David lost many friends and began to lose his mind to cyberpsychosis – Adam Smasher ultimately ended his suffering.
Madoka Learns the Cruel Truth Behind Magical Girls in Puella Magi Madoka Magica
At the start of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Madoka Kaname expects being a magical girl to be a cheerful experience, much like those seen in Sailor Moon. However, she soon discovers a much grimmer truth. After seeing a seasoned magical girl die a tragic death, Madoka realizes the reality is far from the lighthearted stories she knows. She’s forced to confront the disturbing fact that magical girls can become corrupted by their negative feelings, and even more shockingly, that witches actually come from magical girls themselves.
Madoka manages to save all magical girls from becoming witches, but at a great cost – her own life. She’s reborn as a powerful, universal being whose purpose is to prevent others from suffering the same fate, which means giving up her life as a human and saying goodbye to everyone she loves.
Guts is Left Brutalized, Tortured, and Alone at the End of Berserk
Even though Guts survives the anime version of Berserk, he’s a broken man. Throughout most of his life, he was tough, realistic, and didn’t trust others. But joining the Band of the Hawk and meeting Griffith brought out a hopeful side he never knew he possessed. He finally found love, friendship, and a reason to believe in something – only to have it all tragically taken from him during the Eclipse.
When Griffith became a demon, it resulted in the deaths of their friends and deeply traumatized his former lover, shattering Guts’ belief in everything. The betrayal by someone Guts once trusted left him with a lasting emotional scar. While he continues to fight, he’s now motivated not by hope, but by a burning desire for revenge.
Spike Goes Out with a Heartbreaking “Bang” in Cowboy Bebop
At first, Spike appears calm, cool, and collected. He’s one of the most skilled bounty hunters in the solar system, and for much of Cowboy Bebop, he captures criminals with effortless ease. It’s only later in the series that we see the turmoil beneath the surface, stemming from a troubled past and a lost love.
Spike has a short-lived reunion with Julia, but her death crushes any remaining optimism he had. Deciding he wants to die, Spike confronts his enemy Vicious and the entire Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, intending to leave his past and future behind. Unlike many heroes who struggle with loss, Spike had already lost all hope, and when death finally arrived, he welcomed it as a release.
Lelouch Lamperouge Achieves His Goal at the Cost of Himself in Code Geass
At the start of Code Geass, Lelouch Lamperouge wants to free Japan from the control of the Holy Britannian Empire. However, as he pursues this goal, he starts making increasingly questionable choices, blurring the lines between right and wrong. Lelouch comes to terms with the harsh realities of fighting a rebellion and begins to see people as tools, willing to sacrifice them to achieve his larger aims.
Lelouch deliberately portrays himself as a ruthless tyrant to achieve a greater goal: uniting the world and freeing it from oppression. Similar to Eren Yeager, his true intention wasn’t to live in a peaceful world, but to create one, even if it meant sacrificing himself.
Texhnolyze Dooms Its Hero and Humanity With Him
Texhnolyze is a deeply pessimistic anime with a tragic ending, not just for its main character, but for humanity as a whole. The story takes place in the futuristic city of Luz and centers around Ichise, a fighter who loses limbs in an attack. After receiving cybernetic replacements from a scientist, Ichise finds himself caught in a losing battle to save the crumbling city.
Texhnolyze starts with a glimmer of hope, but gradually takes it away. As revolutions fall apart and body modifications become more disturbing, people lose the desire to live. By the anime’s end, Ichise is left alone in a deserted city, watching the last of humanity fade away.
