As a huge Daredevil fan, I think Matt Murdock is one of the most compelling heroes ever created. It’s such a cool origin story – he lost his sight in an accident, but it unlocked incredible abilities in all his other senses! After witnessing his father’s murder, he vowed to fight the criminals who plagued his neighborhood, becoming Daredevil, the protector of Hell’s Kitchen. I was thrilled with the gritty Netflix series, and I’m even more excited about the new show on Disney+. With Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 coming out, it feels like the perfect moment to revisit all the amazing stories about the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen and his endless battle against crime.
Daredevil often finds himself at the heart of Marvel’s most complex and morally challenging stories. These tales frequently explore Matt Murdock’s difficult attempt to juggle his personal life with his dangerous work as a crimefighter, and the toll it takes on him. A courageous but deeply troubled hero, Daredevil is a compelling character who has endured immense hardship to defend those who can’t defend themselves.
10) “Devil at Bay”

While Daredevil is usually known for serious and intense stories, “Devil at Bay” shows a more fun and quirky side of the character. After years protecting Hell’s Kitchen in New York City, Matt Murdock moves to San Francisco, starts a new law firm, and continues fighting crime there. Naturally, he soon crosses paths with a familiar foe, the Owl. Although this story is lighter in tone, it doesn’t dismiss the hardships Daredevil has faced; instead, it allows him to heal and look forward with hope.
9) “Parts of a Hole”

Daredevil is famous for the memorable characters around him, and the story arc “Parts of a Hole” introduced Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, who would become a key ally and love interest. Matt and Maya connected immediately, recognizing a shared understanding, and quickly fell in love. However, Maya was secretly a trained assassin seeking revenge for her father’s death. Kingpin manipulated Echo, leading her to believe Daredevil was responsible, and setting her on a path to kill him – unaware that Daredevil and Matt Murdock are the same person. This forces Daredevil to prove his innocence. “Parts of a Hole” is a moving and powerful story that brilliantly introduces a standout hero in the Marvel universe.
8) “Hardcore”

Daredevil’s life spirals out of control in a surprising turn of events. In “Hardcore,” his secret identity is revealed by the FBI, he’s accused of murder, and old enemies like Kingpin and Typhoid Mary reappear. Kingpin once again targets Daredevil and those he cares about, including his girlfriend, Milla Donovan. Frustrated with Kingpin and his own personal struggles, Daredevil loses control and brutally defeats the crime lord, then shockingly declares himself the new Kingpin of New York. “Hardcore” delivers on its intense title with violent action, gripping drama, and a finale that marks a significant change for Daredevil.
7) “Good Guys Wear Red”

Daredevil and the Punisher are famous rivals in Marvel Comics because they have very different ideas about how to fight crime. In the story “Good Guys Wear Red,” they team up to stop a drug dealer named Hogman who sells to children, but quickly begin to fight each other. The Punisher wants to kill Hogman, believing criminals like him deserve death, while Daredevil refuses to let anyone die, even if they are criminals. This disagreement leads to a huge and intense conflict that truly tests Daredevil’s beliefs.
6) Daredevil: Yellow

Daredevil: Yellow is a moving story about loss, regret, and finding a way forward, offering a fresh take on Daredevil’s beginnings. Presented as a letter Matt Murdock writes to his late love, Karen Page, the story revisits key moments in his life: his father’s death, his first steps as a fledgling hero, and how he and Karen first connected. This series is a deeply personal look at Daredevil, as he reflects on his past and wonders about the paths not taken. It explores his innermost feelings and regrets, while also demonstrating his growth as both a superhero and an individual.
5) “Guardian Devil”

“Guardian Devil” is a standout Daredevil story that deeply explores and questions his Catholic beliefs. It’s an incredibly difficult time for the hero, as he takes in an infant who could be either a savior or a force of evil. On top of that, Daredevil faces a dangerous team-up between the villains Bullseye and Mysterio. Mysterio, facing a cancer diagnosis, attempts one final, devastating act by trying to drive Daredevil mad with a powerful drug. The story is further complicated by the tragic death of Karen Page, an event that profoundly impacts Daredevil and changes the direction of his life. “Guardian Devil” is a captivating and emotionally wrenching story filled with unexpected turns and thought-provoking themes of faith and mortality.
4) “Roulette”

Although Daredevil has a strong sense of right and wrong, this story explores what happens when he’s driven to his breaking point. Still grieving over the death of Elektra and enraged by Bullseye, who is now hospitalized and paralyzed, Daredevil confronts his enemy with a dangerous game of Russian Roulette. During this tense encounter, Daredevil reflects on a past incident – a young fan who tried to emulate him by taking the law into his own hands, resulting in a school shooting. This storyline, titled “Roulette,” is a compelling and dark look at the consequences of vigilantism and the true meaning of heroism.
3) The Man Without Fear

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear is considered the best and most complete telling of Daredevil’s beginnings, detailing how Matt Murdock became the hero known as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. The story delves into Matt’s early life, the accident that caused his blindness, his father’s death, and the start of his crime-fighting career. It shows his progression from street-level brawls to confronting the powerful Kingpin. This version notably redesigned Daredevil’s look, giving him a homemade black costume that proved so popular it was later used in the Netflix series. The story is a dark and realistic take on Daredevil’s origins, fully exploring the complexities of his character.
2) “The Last Hand”

“The Last Hand” is a key story in Daredevil’s history, centered around the death of Elektra, Daredevil’s love interest. After escaping from prison, Bullseye was enraged to discover Elektra had replaced him as the Kingpin’s chief assassin. In a shocking move, he killed her to prove he was the better killer. When Daredevil found Elektra’s body, he vowed revenge, leading to a brutal and intense fight between the two. This storyline solidified Bullseye as one of Daredevil’s most dangerous foes and pushed the Daredevil comics into a more mature and darker tone.
1) “Born Again”

Widely considered the definitive Daredevil story, “Born Again” throws everything at Matt Murdock. When his former love, Karen Page, falls into addiction, she betrays him by revealing his secret identity to Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. This sets off a brutal chain of events where Kingpin systematically destroys Matt’s life – his job, his home, and everyone he cares about. Stripped of everything, Daredevil is forced to rebuild himself and become a relentless force seeking justice. “Born Again” perfectly captures what makes Daredevil so compelling: his unwavering ability to rise from the ashes, even when facing unimaginable hardship, and confront evil.
